You know what I also love about Dishonored? That despite all the magic and the whales and the fantasy worldbuilding, Dunwall still feels very much like a late 19th century city suffering under the weight of industrialism and imperialism.

As someone with a background in Victorianist academia, I can’t stand the kind of steampunk kitsch where the 19th century settings are just used as a pretty backdrop. And I love every game, series or movie that doesn’t neglect the problematic aspects of the era, but instead makes use of them to tell a great story.

I think it's interesting that the relationship between canon and fanfic in BG3 works differently than in many other big fandoms I've encountered.

In most cases, fanfic is used to fill in the gaps or explore aspects that canon itself doesn't provide (mainly by creating relationships between characters that don't exist or are only hinted at in canon) or for pure wish fulfillment (by writing OCs, self-inserts, or character x reader stories).

But BG3 allows you to experience all the traditional fanfic mechanisms (self-insert, shipping, multi-shipping etc) in canon - and there's still a thriving fandom with more than ten thousand fics, all created in the last few months. And it includes both types of fannish activity: traditional shipping with pairings like Bloodweave or Halstarion as well as OC, or self-insert fic with the Tav or Durge x character stories.

I love that we as a fandom can still find gaps to fill, stories to tell, and potential to explore (or just outlets for our horniness), even when a canon delivers almost everything we crave in a very fannish, iddy way. I mean, you can play all the companion pairings during an origin run, but it's still not enough, people are -still- writing fic - that's wonderful!

I think I mentioned it before somewhere but Nick Cave's "Red Right Hand" - overplayed and Peaky-Blinders-ized as it is - is still my perfect pre-redemption Daud song

Gary Numan's "My Name is Ruin" is another staple on my playlist – the lyrics don't fit 100% but the self-loathing and the general vibes are spot-on

And because you can never go wrong with 80s Nick Cave when it comes to self-mythologizing and angsty antiheroes, there's "Up jumped the devil" ("I was doomed from the start/to play the villain's part")

I think I mentioned it before somewhere – "Blackfriar's Bridge" by The Men They Couldn't Hang Yes, this is a London song but also soo Dunwall. And I associate it very much with the working class view of the city we get in the Daud DLCs

And last but not least there's "Joy" by VNV Nation - It's one of my all-time favorute tracks and for some reason I tend to fall in love with characters that fit the song not the other way around lol

@uncontrol-freak I actually don't have a song for Thomas - just general vibes found in indie/folk/emo stuff from the 00s (I might have listened to a lot of Two Gallants while writing although they don't have a single song that 100% fits Thomas' character or motivations)

@starsharks same goes for the Whalers as a group - I don't have a specific song for them but I'm still on the lookout

Usually I'm a total playlist person (ask me about my aggrotech/electro Anakin Skywalker mix...) but the problem here is that most of my 30 track Dishonored playlist are either songs I originally researched for the revolution in Dunwall fic I'm probably never going to write, songs that just fit the general vibes of the setting, songs that are Corvo-specific (for some reason he's easier) or songs I stole from other people's DH playlists.

So clearly, I need to listen to more folk, indie or goth songs about guilt, murder and redemption – and I'm eternally thankful for recs!

It’s done. 89k, six months and I just typed the last words of the final „hollow men“ chapter. I’m feeling …emotions now

The first draft of the final chapter is 9k long - help?!

It will take a while until I’m through with all the edits and able to put it up on AO3. But right now I’m just overwhelmed that IT’S DONE!!!

🤔 I dunno if it counts, but what about pirate AU?

I know I'm terribly late in replying to the ask but haven't forgotten about the AU headcanon meme!

Pirates… hm… There is already an DH pirate AU out there (I saw fanart from idk 2017? 2018? which was absolutely mindblowing) so that's probably better than anything I can come up with but I'll give it a try:

The problem is… I know next to nothing about the era and only casually watched Black Sails and OFMD

So... what about this?

Jessamine runs a trade post on a Caribbean island with Corvo as her bodyguard/secret lover - Burrows is a powerful sugar/rum/whatever trader and wants to have her out of the way in order to gain power over the ressources on her island – so he hires the pirate Daud and his crew to assassinate her

Corvo gets framed for her murder but manages to escape, steal a ship, gather a crew (with the help of Samuel) and sets out on a quest for revenge (I think he has Samuel and Pietro on his crew but not the other Loyalists. I see Havelock, Martin & Pendleton as Royal Navy officers but don't know how to put them into the story yet)

The magic system is voodoo-based, maybe with the Outsider as some kind of powerful loa?

I don't know what Daud's ship is called but of course Billie is his quartermaster and Thomas first mate (and later on, Billie initiates a mutiny and gets her own ship)

Daud wears an eyepatch on the scarred side of his face

Okay, as I said, this is just a veeery rough idea but now I kinda want to do some research…
