day 522
rise and grind! she's not a morning person but at least there's coffee
Martin and Asgore: While both are fathers who end up estranged from their families, both also look quite similar—blonde fathers who wear goofy shirts—and on the surface share similar personalities, being goofy. The difference is that while both experienced a huge incident that caused their personalities to shift, Martin is in denial, has pretty much stopped caring about his daughters, and is selfish. Asgore, while letting his issues with what happened that day make him insensitive to everyone (thus causing a falling out with his family), ultimately is able to wake up from this and change for the better. It says something that he’s willing to clear things up with his friends and family, while Molly disowns her dad, realizing he’ll never change.
Calliope and Toriel are pretty similar, aside from one not being dead. While both on the surface seem like normal people, it’s heavily implied that had Calliope lived and Martin died, she would have been an overbearing helicopter parent, as opposed to Martin’s immense neglect. This shows that even though Calliope appears to be a much better parent and person than her husband, she was ultimately just as dysfunctional and selfish as he was, because she never really grew as a person from her husband’s carefree influence, even though he was the only one who could calm her down from her workaholic, neurotic flaws. Toriel, meanwhile, shows remorse for her actions, yet she still displays some insensitivity by sneaking out to get drunk with Sans without telling Kris—though Kris has their own plans, so it’s far more complicated.
Molly and Kris could not be more different. Due to Martin’s carefree nature, Molly had to grow up early and is thus far more mature. Similar to Noelle of all people, she is a doormat—at least until she grows a spine—and then becomes more honest. Kris was a goofy prankster kid when younger and is now more reserved, similar to Molly, but is still a goofball weirdo. However, both are shown to be rather sane compared to their companions’ quirks, and of course are far smarter than they seem or look. They have anger, sadness, and a cynical nature which, for Molly, is due to being neglected by everyone, while for Kris it stems from a myriad of things: the family falling out, that mysterious day, soul issues, and whatever their deal is.
Lorelai and Asriel could not be more different—or so it seems from what we know for now. As of Chapter 5, Asriel is a nice guy, an ace who’s pretty much good at everything he does, has good social standing, and overall has a good everything in life, but is ultimately a greater-scope character to the story whose influence is felt while he is not seen (while at college). Lorelai, meanwhile, is a shut-in who’s bratty, though she has more than what she seems. Like Asriel, she was a cool big sibling to her sister, but the incident of their mother’s death caused her to retreat into her dream-bubble fantasies. This is ironic because Dark Worlds are personifications of dreams and fantasy, and Asriel has yet to enter a Dark World or connect to one—even more ironic given that his Undertale self is connected to the themes of Hopes and Dreams. Anyhow, Asriel seems to genuinely care toward his younger siblings still, if Kris’s words are anything to go by. This means Lorelai is oblivious to her own jerkishness, shirks responsibilities, is pissed off at having to do anything to help Molly, and anytime she does help, it’s always for her own benefit rather than Molly’s. Ironically enough, most of her behavior makes her similar to UT Asriel—or better known as Flowey.
