I have finally figured it out. Janky as it appears to the untrained eye, there is no way nice looking way around the problem, since HTML ignores extra whitespace (tabs, line breaks, and spaces — with good reason). Masquer le texte d'un élément html

Masquer le texte d'un élément html peut être utile esthétiquement si par exemple l'élément doit montrer un visuel mis en background-image comme un logo provenant d'un sprite. Niveau référencement il est préférable de ne pas laisser une balise vide sans texte. Donc de mettre du texte et de le masquer pour qu'il ne s'affiche pas :

a.logo{ background : url(sprite.png) 0 0 no-repeat; width : 200px; height : 200px; text-indent : -9999px; text-transform : capitalize; display : block; }

text-transform : capitalize permet de régler le fonctionnement sur ie7 lorsqu'un élément a text-indent.

O text-indent é uma das super vantagens do css, com o text-indent é possível que você "empurre" o texto, dentro de uma box, lista ou do que for... E isso sem usar a borda, que é uma total desvantagem, porque meio que, vai que o seu menu não caiba ali depois da borda, ou coisa do tipo? É muito chato isso, e antes de saber que o text-indent existia eu usava por borda e alguns materiais do meu tema ficavam bem estranhos mesmo por essa questão, então é um alerta e dica o que estou dando.

Ah, o efeito inverter com o text-indent é bem legal mesmo, tem como você ir e sem ser no hover colocar text-indent:10px; ou 20, o que quiser e no hover colocar text-indent:0px; ou menos, é bem fofo, espero que seja útil *.*

.hide-text { text-indent: 100%; white-space: nowrap; overflow: hidden; }

Really long strings of text will never flow into the container because they always flow away from the container. 

Performance is dramatically improved because a 9999px box is not drawn. Noticeably so in animations on the iPad 1.
