The Texture Language

“All new stylists must undergo a period of time where they assist stylists who have worked at the salon for many years,” says Ramsey Sayah, Owner of Texture Hair Boutique in Ottawa, Ontario. “This is so they can learn the ‘Texture Language,’ and how we do things differently from another salon.”

Apparently, there are a few key words in the Texture Language that are taught first. Forget Hello and goodbye, yes and no. The Texture key words seem to be… Win. Awesome. Awards. Alot.

In fact, an unheard of number of stylists – four, to be exact – from Texture were selected as finalists in Wella’s North American Trend Vision Awards and will be headed to the finals in Vegas in July. 

So how does one – even as masterful one – cultivate such a talented crew? 

“I strongly believe that you don’t attract top talent, you create it. However, it takes a person who wants to be on top to make it there,” says Sayah. “We treat each of our team members as family; we never stop challenging them so they never fall short of their capabilities; and we constantly participate in competitions such as Trend Vision, fashion events and other community events.”

In addition, he points to Texture’s set up as a “one room show,” free from the restrictions of walls or barriers, the design of which is intended to create a working environment where our stylists can create and self-express and share as artists. The result is that stylists can showcase their work freely, surrounded by good company, food, music, and laughter (yes, please, we’d like to come. Call us anytime!)

In the end, the language spoken by the team at Texture might be more like what you’d hear with a big group of friends and family gathered around the dinner table. “I feel as though the best advice I can give is to close the gap between owner and stylist,” Sayah says. “All owners – especially those who began as stylists – must remember where they started, and by doing this you don’t lose focus on the love of the craft.”
