so i've had this idea percolating in my brain for at least like. a year now. and i have channeled this into exactly zero words of actual fic so.
tbh i don't particularly care about the amnesia trope, but i do think there is something potentially very interesting about it, particularly in a contemporary rpf space, as an exploration of the construction of self. there are so many "primary sources" available (so to speak) that a modern character could turn to while trying to learn about themselves and their biographical information, upon losing their memories. so many interviews and videos and photos, etc etc etc! think how many personal stories the average person has and how many times they may tell those to another person as a core defining moment of one's life... how certain "facts" and "truths" about oneself form out of subjective memories... and how that effect must be magnified for a public figure. how many times has charles told the story about skipping school to go to the karting track as a child with his father? how that has become calcified into his personal history, a recognizable "fact" not just for himself but for so many other people, his fans.
but there's still a gap between the lived experiences that only he can know and the stories that have been tidied up for public consumption and for the media. an amnesiac charles could read his own words about himself and his relationships with the team, with fred, with his friends on and off the grid, etc -- but it wouldn't be the same as knowing himself. there's a filter that's been created by his past self in choosing what to share of himself and how. and for someone like charles, who i find is generally very careful in how he expresses himself and the words he chooses, i think there's space to create something really interesting.
(i feel like i need to make clear now that i don't think this makes his stories or the person that he presents to the world any less "genuine" in that specific regard -- everyone does this to some degree! this is part of being a person in society! the person i present to my supervisors at work is different from how i present myself to my best friend who i live with, which is different from how i present myself to the distant college friend to whom i occasionally send christmas cards. but i digress. if we're mutuals you may have already heard my complaints about how broadly the term "pr" gets throw about in fandom w/r/t/ charles, lmao)
anyway. local woman who says she doesn't care about amnesia trope writes as many as several words about amnesia fic.
