Did you watch the 2025 Game Awards? Any thoughts on the winners or the trailer reveals?
I watched it out of habit and I feel like I regretted it. There were a few interesting reveals, I guess. A new Mega Man is nice. But I felt like it was three hours of games that look like this:
Minus logos, setup, or identifying marks, can any of these games be told apart? Character design is dead. There is only costume design and set dressing now. There is only photo-realism.
Yes, we had games like Mega Man, and Stupid Never Dies, but those definitely felt like outliers in an industry that would rather spend $100 million on photo scanned humans and performance capture.
And that's just me complaining about the lack of stylization. I wonder what would happen if you ran the numbers on footage of interactive gameplay versus non-interactive cinematics?
This stuff isn't impressive anymore and half the people on stage at The Game Awards appeared to be on something. All the celebrities came out vibrantly buzzing on something and even Geoff was slurring his words by the end of the night.
Even if you want to be charitable, it was a bad scene and a boring show. It is the last time I am watching The Game Awards.
