If you can’t tell, I’ve been thinking way too much about Reinette and if I actually had the time, there probably would be a 2,000-word essay on it already, particularly in comparison with Amy’s storyline and characterisation.

Mind you, Reinette does hold up her opinion on the Doctor and monsters as something exemplary, which anyone close to the Doctor would share. Ultimately, she’s not actually a perfect character.
She’s made rash choices, shared a laugh about another person’s future death, and her confidence in her own mind and perception - while founded on her intelligence, wit and unique poetic perspective - occasionally crosses the line towards being presumptuous and conceited. And her interactions with Rose are sometimes coloured by this.
It’s part of what makes her such a compelling character, in my opinion. But it’s sort of beside the point, for the issue at hand.

Whaaaaaaat why is the episode hated? It’s definitely in my top five!
Oh, it's generally well-liked and critically acclaimed. It's more that among specific parts of the fandom, people despise it, quite a bit. For a variety of reasons, really, the most notable being the relationship between Reinette and the Doctor (partly in how it clashes with Ten/Rose shipping) and the way Reinette's character is being handled (making a historic figure love the Doctor, introducing the concept of the Doctor meeting someone as a child first, Reinette's characterisation ticking boxes of what people dislike about Moffat's female characters etc.). It's a fantastic episode, in my opinion. But it really, really divides opinions.

Wow, you’re right, that episode is really yellow. Maybe it’s supposed to be the glow of the fireplace juxtaposed with the cold blues of the ship?
Yes, maybe. It definitely adds to the atmosphere of the episode, between the yellow and the blue/cyan, which is more present on the spaceship. But it's so damn hard to make gifs from it which look the way I want. A couple of Reinette's scenes are essentially entirely yellow - blonde hair, dress in light colours, skin yellow due to the lighting, warm background...
aaaaaaaaaaaand....
she fucking kisses him.
Because. You know. Being terrified and grabbed by a man that comes into your room at night when you're seven years old is so sexy and romantic.
And oh, oh, OHHH they're focusing in on the kiss like HUHUHUHU LOOK HOW MUCH BETTER SHE IS THAN ROSE HUHUHUHU
AND YOU KNOW OF COURSE HE DOESN'T TRY TO STOP HER BECAUSE THE DOCTOR ALWAYS WANTS TO MAKE OUT WITH EVERYONE HE MEETS EVEN THOUGH THEY WERE JUST A CHILD NOT EVEN FIVE MINUTES AGO
AND HOW HE LAUGHING BECAUE HE SNOGGED MADAM DE PMPADOUR
HOW DO YOU KNOW IT'S A HUMAN HEART ROSE? HUH?
Hey look it's Guinevere hi Gwen
I am rewriting this entire episode this is absolute shit how the fuck did they even get out of the drawing room WHAT THE FUCK MOFFAT
THE DOCTOR IS NOW STARING DOWN AT REINETTE'S BOOBS WITH A SMILE ON HIS FACE AS HE REALIZES THAT TEH CHILD HE WAS JUST TALKING TO A FEW MOMENTS AGO IS NOW AN ADULT SHE IS NOW LEGAL
ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME DOCTOR
"Reinette, don't look 'round."
THERE IS A SIX FOOT FUCKING TALL MONSTER BEHIND YOU THAT WANTS TO KILL YOU BUT DON'T LOOK AT IT JUST SIT THERE AND DON'T MOVE AND DON'T GET TO SAFETY DON'T DO ANYTHING AT ALL JUST SIT THERE AND DON'T LOOK AT IT
"You stay exactly where you are."
DON'T MOVE DON'T RUN OUT OF HTE ROOM DON'T CALL FOR HELP JUST FUCKING SIT THERE.
[to the fucking goddamn monster] "Hold still, let me look."
AND NOW HE JUST FUCKING GRABS REINETTE'S FACE AND STARES AT HER AND IGNORES HOW FUCKING COMPLETLEY TERRIFIED SHE IS BECAUSE APPARENTLY THE DOCTOR CAN UNDERSTAND CLOCKWORK ROBOTS EVEN WHEN THEY DON'T SAY ANYTHING AND APPARENTLY SHE'S NOTHING BUT AN OBJECT BECAUSE HE'S SHOVING HIS FACE INCHES FROM HERS
AND NOW HE'S JUST TELLING HER THAT'S IT'S JUST A NIGHTMARE THIS ISN'T REAL THIS ISN'T REAL IT'S JUST A NIGHTMARE IT'S NOT LIKE YOU ARE IN VERY REAL FUCKING DANGER OR ANYTHING DON'T BOTHER TO TELL ANYONE WHAT HAPPENED DON'T ASK TO BE MOVED TO A DIFFERENT ROOM IT'S JUST A NIGHTMARE IT'S FINE YOU'RE NOT IN DANGER OR ANYTHING IT'S JUST A NIGHTMARE AND NO ONE IS GOING TO BELEIVE YO SO DON'T EVEN BOTHER TRYING TO TELL YOUR PARENTS THAT THERE WAS A MONSTER HIDING UNDER YOUR BED AND A MAN THAT CAME THROUGH THE FIREPLACE THAT WAS GRABBING YOU AND SCARING YOU HALF TO DEATH
THIS LITTLE GIRL IS LITERALLY TREMBLING WITH FEAR AND HE JUST KEEPS TALKING AND BEING DRAMATIC INSTEAD OF GETTING HER OUT OF THE FUCKING ROOM
