I've been reading The Grace of Kings by Ken Liu and have clocked two separate direct references to the Wheel Of Time so far as well as a huge amount of thematic influence (especially in regards to duty, freedom, the unforgiving nature of history, and the power of stories/legends) and I am shocked, shocked that I haven't seen more WoT fans talking about this book.
In a lot of ways it's like what would happen if Jordan had decided to put the emphasis on Artur Hawking or the Seanchan consolidation instead of Tamon Gai'don: full of meditations on power, empire, and the merciless march of time. And also the protagonists where less unstable Mat and a slight more batshit Lan.
