oh wow this has been in my inbox for far too long so i had to think about this.
that matthias helvar and nikolai lanstov share the same father
the idea first came to me when nikolai’s father is revealed to be magnus opjer, a fjerdan ambassador and idk i like the idea of that fjerdan ambassador going back and a few years later, matthias is born.
and there’s angst too!! i imagine nina going back to ravka and she tells them everything about matthias dying and how he was noble and all that and then with coercion from genya and grudgingly, zoya, as well they come to a decision.
nikolai says they’ll build a special memorial for him and he asks questions about his parents and family and nina’s like ‘his father was a fjerdan ambassador, magnus opjer’ and nikolai is like what??? his father??? so matthias, the tall, blond sort of sulking fjerdan he saw on stage with kaz brekker was his brother??!?!?
it gets sadder because now he knows that his father is dead and he also had a little half sister too and he visits fjerda to pay his respects and it’s just really sad.
