Hiddles Birthday Week 2021: Day One ~ Favourite Interview

My favourite interview this year is the Coriolanus Instagram Live, which took place on the 4th June 2020. It was full of all the silliness, sass and face nonsense that we’ve all come to love about Tom in interviews. Not only was it in aid of a great cause, but it was a much needed boost to morale in the midst of the first (of many) lockdowns around the world. While not strictly an ‘interview’, there were plenty of revelations about the play and what happened behind the scenes, plus a rare chance to see Hiddles in the ‘wild’. As usual, the camaraderie between Tom and his colleagues was wonderful, and we were also treated to some excellent Hiddles advice (even though he really didn’t want to give it!)

i’m not sure if this counts as an interview , but i honestly love this so much.  “I try not to feel guilty about pleasures, I think that if it’s a pleasure that’s not hurting anyone else, I think you should indulge it, and not feel guilty about it.”, it’s so uplifting !!! i used to feel super guilty after eating cake , but after this interview i realised how silly i was.  thanks tom I'm going to go eat some cake now <3

This was equally hard and easy, because Tom says so many passionate, earnest and insightful things in lots of his interviews that I could happily write here, but the one that has always resonated with me the deepest and has had the most profound effect on me is perhaps a lesser known quote from a two part interview he did in 2013 with RADA, his old drama school.

I am my own worst critic and unfairly demand perfection of myself most of the time. I don't know when exactly when my unhealthy stance on my mistakes and flaws began, but I imagine childhood bullying played a part. Logically I know mistakes are how we learn and grow as people and I have gotten better over the years, but sadly my kneejerk response to an error I make is to be rather unkind to myself and unhealthily focus on the negative. This quote reminds me to be kinder to myself, learn from my mistakes and try again. To have a more open and positive approach to mistakes. It's a simple concept I'm aware of and yet coming from him just makes it easier to accomplish. Maybe it's silly, but it helps me. It also doesn't hurt hearing such helpful advice in his lovely, dulcet tones. 😏
