I always liked Dave x Sal way better than Dave x Tyson because of so many key aspects to Sal's character.

Sal is the only character to see Dave as nothing but a friend when the game starts; Hoss was curious about Dave, Roswell felt something although he didn't know if it was romantic love or platonic love and Dean and Tyson were in love with Dave. This allows his relationship with Dave to be a satisfactory slow burn that culminates with Sal confessing to Dave.

Sal and Dave bond through the trauma of losing a loved one, they both feel the need to be the protector of the group, Dave because his dad was a police officer and Sal because he failed to protect his sister, they both have a connection to the Noble and Hammond's families, and Sal even goes onto becoming a police officer at the end of the game.

(Note: I'm pretty sure that's canon for the new timeline and that it was confirmed Sal was going to be a police officer in the sequel, but I could be wrong)

On the other hand I really love the idea that Tyson found a brother in Dave and a father in David to replace his broken family. He was a bully because he was a scared kid being abused by his dad, and Dave was the only one who stood up for him. Later we find out David even considered adopting Tyson (although I'm pretty sure he didn't follow through because Tyson told him he was falling for Dave).

Tyson is Dave's brother, near the end of the game Dave hallucinates his dad coming to rescue him, but it turns out to be Tyson instead, because they are family and his family always looked after him.

David in heaven in the new timeline be like:

I don't necessarily hate Dave x Tyson though, I just think it works better with Sal. Not even mentioning that it took a month of a life and death situation so Tyson could confess his feelings, but in the new timeline it took him a needle to the neck and a 15 minutes talk.
