Dear Dwyane Wade,

In 2003, the Miami Heat drafted you as their 5th overall pick.  I was raised in West Palm Beach, only an hour from Miami where I was no stranger to as a child.  My family was huge Miami Heat fans and they brought me to games since I was a toddler and Heat games were held in the Miami Arena. As I grew older, I started to become familiar with the names of the Heat players and started getting excited.  I remember going to my very first Playoff game in 2004 against the Hornets when you hit that clutch shot.  We were all the way in the last row, yes the ultimate nosebleed seats. I kept hearing Michael B. say your name and asked my uncle... “Who is that Wade guy? he’s really good” and my uncle told me “that’s the future of the Miami Heat, remember this day.”  This was the day I became a huge fan and started following as actively as possible for a 4th grader. That was the summer we signed Shaq, and when things got really interesting, we made it to the ECF and we lost to Detroit… I cried for the first time about any sport.  My parents and family kept telling me, “don’t worry, we will win next year.” They called it right.  You and the Heat brought the first NBA championship to Miami and I could not have been any happier.  You were my Hero.  The way you were able to create shots for yourself, the way you zipped through the defense, the way you sacrificed your body for every play, it was so inspiring.  I wanted to play like you, started molding my playing style after yours.  The euro-step, the crossover, the awkward acrobatic shots… I wanted to be like you.  I knew I could never be like you cause you were one of a kind.  When you hurt you shoulder trying to steal the ball from Shane Battier against the Rockets, I cried… My hero goes down.  I thought I would never see you play basketball again seeing that look on your face…  When you came back and performed in the Olympics and help win the Gold medal with your bald head, I was so excited.  I was always excited seeing you play, even during our 15 win season.  As I grew older, all I knew was Dwyane Wade and the Miami Heat.  When the rumors of you leaving in 2010, I was afraid.  I didn’t want to loose my favorite player.  When you said you were going to what was best for your family, and you were from Chicago, and I was pretty sure you were headed out.  I was terrified. we all were.  But you came back and not only did you come back, you brought two draft mates and friends, CB and LeBron with you!  I was ecstatic! I always had you in front of LeBron, even when he joined us!  It was a great time for Miami and Heat Nation. Those 4 years were surreal to me! My team that I was with from the beginning was now on top of the basketball world again and it seemed like it would be forever! 4 Finals appearances, winning twice in those 4 years was the greatest feeling as a fan. But that all turned around when I and all of the fans watched our dream team, made look like fools by the extremely amazing team play of the Spurs in 2014.  It hurt to watch and it hurt, even more, to watch LeBron James leave to go back to Cleveland.  But we were all good, we were able to keep you and CB and this was a great opportunity to show that you still had the ability to carry a team despite past injuries.  The first year 14-15 was full of ups and downs but you showed many people you still had it in you.  When CB went down that was tough, but we managed to make it close to making the playoffs that year.  that offseason was the first stressful one hearing the issues between you and the organization.  I started asking myself.. “could he be leaving? no, these are just rumors.” I brush them off and soon you resigned for $20 Million, which did not seem that bad at all.  That same offseason we received Justice Winslow, J Rich, and we had an upcoming all-star center with Hassan.  I knew we were making the playoffs this season because you were going to lead us there. There was always hope with you around. And damn what a great season it was! despite losing CB again, that season was close to perfect as we could have gotten.  You guys worked so hard. and you worked harder putting us on your back in the playoffs! I know this is getting long, and I know you might not be reading this. but thank you. I’m sure you’ve heard it a lot already, but really. T H A N K  Y O U!  For many of us, you were, and are still, our hero.  You taught us that we didn’t need to be a gifted to win, that we could win with handwork and dedication. You taught us that we could always come back stronger from any injury or setback. You told us “fall down seven times, stand up eight”.  Thank you for all of those lessons.  I wish the Heat fought for you harder, but I see why they did as a business decision, I wish you chose to stay anyway, but I understand  why you didn’t as a business and family decision.  I wish it wasn’t so much a business. I wish this was worked out better.  I wish I got to meet you and get my photo of you dunking in San Antonio signed.  I wish this day did not have to come, and yes I do feel it came too early… but Goodbye Wade. We never wanted you to leave, and we know you never wanted to leave either... From me and all the men you inspired as kids, thank you and we love you.  I hope that you come back soon and retire with the heat.
