At first he thinks it’s nothing. The Warden, after all, has a loud way of flirting with everyone. But it doesn’t take him long to realize this is different – not smug advances made with a cocky smile but nervous laughter and a hand at the back of his neck, bashful and bewildered.

He decides to wait, and watch. He waits for the Warden to lose interest, as he has seemed to in all other things, after enough time. But he doesn’t.

His halla doesn’t appear to notice at first. That’s the way of all beautiful things – not to demand attention, not to think it could be meant for them. But eventually glances exchanged over idle conversation seem uncomfortable, where before they were harmless, and he notices the way his halla’s eyes skitter away in confusion and guilt.

Nin is confused, but Thalon isn’t. He knows his halla’s heart better than he knows his own.

He only needs Nin's answers to two questions:

Do you want him?

Could you love him?

Ship fact: Josrand's bed isn't big enough for the three of them, so she and Cullen have to sleep on top of Bull at night. It's too warm and she's worried she'll fall off, but it's nice.

Ahhahah, OT3 logistics…what a headache amiright? I’ll be honest, that sounds intensely uncomfortable…but I guess as long as Bull’s not a restless sleeper it can work. xD

Fortunately, Thalon’s bed is big enough for him, Rion, and Nindarhmen. Rion takes up half the bed himself, sprawled with his too-long limbs all over the place. Nindarhmen, meanwhile, is a clingy sleeper who loves to tangle himself in his lovers when he’s sleeping.

Thalon’s the most restless sleeper out of the three, and he can’t fall asleep unless he’s curled on his side in the corner of the bed not occupied by Rion and Nin. But, invariably, when he wakes in the middle of the night, he inches closer to both of them, and often wakes in the morning tucked into Rion’s shoulder, or wrapped in Nin’s embrace.

I don't have a ship but tell me a fact about Thalon's OT3. <3 <3

Eeee, aren’t you so sweet! Of course I’ll be glad to gush about the OT3 that owns my heart, hahah.

The moment Thalon realized he had feelings for Rion beyond aesthetic attraction was after Redcliffe, after seeing the dark future where Rion and Nin were tortured and corrupted with red lyrium.

For Thalon, that alternate future was a bad nightmare he had to make sure never happened, but for Rion and Nin it was real. They spent an entire year imprisoned together, taking what strength they could from each other even as they slowly lost hope.

Thalon watched Rion and Nin sacrifice themselves to give him and Dorian a chance, but there was a single moment before they turned away to go to their deaths, when Thalon saw Nin’s hand reach for Rion’s, lyrium-scarred fingers brushing against each other for some kind of broken reassurance.

Back in the present – where Rion and Nin were safe – Thalon never told either of them about what he saw in the future…but for him, it was when he knew that their destinies were entwined, even if he didn’t yet understand how.

For tmi Tuesday I have a question that I guess that can span over any au? You can choose whichever one of course! Does Thalon have any pets?

Heyy, sorry for such a late reply! This is a great question, actually, cus I don’t think we’ve actually talked about this part of the modern AU yet and it’s one of my favorite things. :D

First, though, Thedas. Thedas Thalon isn’t much of an animal person. It’s not that he dislikes animals, he just sees them pragmatically, as mounts or pack animals or hunting dogs. He doesn’t get emotionally attached.

Thalon doesn’t have any pets but he does have two mounts. The first is a hart named Dys who was a gift from Nin’s parents, big brother to Nin’s hart Elia. (In appearance, Dys resembles the Royal Sixteen.) After Skyhold, he also has a Green Dales Feral named Warden, a name Sera gave him so she could make the (hilarious) joke that Thalon is “riding his Warden.”

Rion also does have three mabari, I believe, by the time Trespasser rolls around, so I suppose you could say Thalon has pets by extension. Haha.

The modern AU is similar. Thalon and Nin don’t have any pets of their own; their professional lives keep them too busy. When Rion comes into their lives, however, he brings his three beautiful dogs with him…and modern Thalon is a dog-lover. A major dog-lover.

Brennan, Rion’s black German Shepherd, is the one I have Feelings about. Brennan’s an ex-police dog who was dismissed from the training program for being too excitable and Thalon is ex-military diagnosed with PTSD who worked with German Shepherds in Afghanistan.

Thalon’s therapist had encouraged him to consider a therapy animal, but because of his job leaving him with no time to care for a pet, he never went ahead with the idea. When Brennan comes into his life, though, Thalon forms an immediate bond with this dog, who happens to be great at picking up on emotions and telling when someone’s upset.

Brennan is still Rion’s, of course, and considers Rion his pack leader, but he’s got a special thing going with Thalon and it gives me approximately 50,000 emotions. <333

It was far too early and the day before had been far to long but the woodpecker didn't seem to care.

Thalon rolled onto his back, scrubbing his face with both hands, and groaned as yesterday’s bruises reasserted themselves. He’d gotten too close to the giant – just as Cassandra warned him not to – but what had been a cracked rib and a dislocated shoulder the night before was now little more than a swath of purple bruising, and a pounding headache.

The woodpecker hadn’t stopped. A spark of memory, and Thalon remembered the old Elvhen rhyme Nin had sung, the first time they’d come here to the Emerald Graves, together with Rion:

Thalon sighed and closed his aching eyes, sure that he was twice as weary with homesickness as he’d ever been from any amount of lost sleep.

(Note: The translation of the rhyme, in case anyone’s curious: “Woodpecker, woodpecker, teacher and Mythal’s friend! Woodpecker, woodpecker, guardian of Halamshiral!” The word I’ve used for “woodpecker” is literally “wood-bird” or “tree-bird.”)
