at my job (selling tickets) i get a little nervous asking older people if they're getting a Regular Adult ticket or a Senior* ticket, because if i'm wrong they may get offended, but also i want to help customers save money and a lot of people don't know we have a senior discount AND have a tendency to ask about it juuust as they're beeping their payment cards and it's too late to change the course of history, so ultimately it is worth the risk of a little faux pas.

(* - the category isn't actually called senior, it's a discount category that covers seniors, people on disability, and in our case also military. i cannot find an english word equivalent of it, though a direct translation of the word would be "salute". the point is that it covers people of all ages and you can't tell if someone belongs to this category by appearance alone, though disabled people are much better at asking for the discount and i count on them doing so)

today someone got offended that i referred to their Baby as a Child.
