Only child of Gerda Theron (née Gerda Jacoba Aletta Maritz) and Charles Jacobus Theron. She was raised on a farm outside the city. She is of Afrikaner (Dutch, with some French Huguenot and German) descent, and Afrikaner military figure Danie Theron was her great-great-uncle. She was also a trained ballet dancer, having danced both the "Swan Lake" and "The Nutcracker". However, an injured knee stopped her dancing career. In 1994 she went to a bank to cash a check for $500 she received from her mother, and became furious when she learned that the bank would not cash it because it was an out-of-state check. Making a scene, an agent gave her his card, in exchange for learning American English, which she did by watching soap operas on television. Known for starring in numerous Hollywood films, such as That Thing You Do! (1996), The Devil's Advocate (1997), Mighty Joe Young (1998), The Cider House Rules (1999), The Italian Job (2003), Hancock (2008), The Road (2009), Snow White and the Huntsman (2012), Prometheus (2012), A Million Ways to Die in the West (2014), Mad Max: Fury Road (2015), The Fate of the Furious (2017), and Atomic Blonde (2017). On February 29, 2004, she won her first Academy Award, for her performance in Monster (2003). "A King has his reign, and then he dies. It's inevitable. That is natural order of things." #charlizetheron #vickers #Prometheus #thathingyoudo #devilsadvocate #mightyjoeyoung #theciderhouserules #theitalianjob #hancock #theroad #snowwhiteandthehuntsman #madmaxfuryroad #atomicblonde #thefateofthefurious
