He looks so small. Small as his human body, the one she had only seen once, lit by the glow of a failed transference. The nest of wires makes him look even smaller, a glittering net that Neytiri does her best not to disturb.

Not that it matters, really. They'll be disconnecting all the wires soon, putting Jake in the tank. That's what Norm calls it, a stasis tank. Neytiri had mouthed the word to herself over and over, sealing it in her mind, the way Jake would be sealed. Looked away, caught between the living and the dead, until they managed to resurrect him.

We might, Norm had said, voice taut with desperate hope. It...he could come back tomorrow, or ten years from now, or never. It's impossible to say. We don't even understand why it worked for Grace, let alone why it failed for him.

Grace. Neytiri hasn't really been able to look at her since it happened, since Grace had come flying to Vitraya Ramunong on the back of a plant-drugged, but unmistakable Toruk. The favor of Eywa had been unmistakable, but that has not made it any easier to bear the crushing weight, the endless loop of why you and not him?

It was easier to throw herself into the heat of battle, but now the demon is dead and the land is scarred and nothing makes sense anymore. Father is recovering from his wounds, as is Tsu'tey; Neytiri's long-delayed mating ceremony will take place as soon as her mourning period is over.

Tsu'tey will be good to her, she knows. And yet, will not be her Jake, her munxtatan, the one she chose in defiance of every rule her People have. She had stepped outside her sister's ghost for one heartbeat and now she must step inside, for the good of the People.

Neytiri will not leave Jake behind, she can promise herself that. She will never give up hope, foolish as it might be. And if she only ever sees him as a ghost in the slowly regrowing Utraya Mokri, she will savor those moments with everything she has.

She savors this moment in the same way, as terribly wrong as it feels. Her Jake is small, a hollowed shell, but he is still here, still hers. His chest rises and falls as she kneels by his bed, her breath rustling his hair.

"We lived," she whispers, close to his ear. "We saved the world, ma Jake. We sent the aliens home." Most of them, anyway. The scientists will stay on, carefully watched, along with the human infant she could not quite bring herself to kill. "We did it in Sylwanin's name, and in yours."

He doesn't stir. Even when she takes his chin in her hand and turns it to face her, he doesn't stir. His lips do not react when she pressures hers to them, slowly, hesitantly, this strange human act of kissing that he taught her amidst Utraya Mokri's roots.

Strange, but beautiful, like everything she shared with them. Neytiri's breath hitches against her will, tears sparking in her ears. She lets them fall, lets them stain her face and his, the broken reek of salt filling her nose as she breaks away with a gasp.

"Ma Jake." She pressures their foreheads together, trembling. Very soon she will be brave, she will be strong, but when it's just the two of them there is nothing for her to do except fall apart. "Oh, ma Jake."
