The Questions: (I’m going to answer them regarding Leonie, because she has one of the most complicated back story)
1. Has your character ever been in love and/or had his/her heart broken. If so explain the affair in one paragraph.
Leonie likes to think she hasn't because she thinks love is a sign of weakness and loved ones are nothing more than liabilities. But her heart has been broken. But more so in the sense that the affair has so to speak destroyed her capability to love someone. And that's the fact that she comes from a broken home. She always admired her father. However, he wasn't such a kind man as everyone thought he was. And he verbally abused Leonie and her mother for being women. Because in his eyes they were 'weak and nothing more than a liability and a responsibility for men to carry on their shoulders'. The fact that her father, the one man she admired, treated her so cruelly and seemed to love her only like a sick little lamb he was helping, broke her heart because she felt she was nothing but a burden to him. And because of that, she refuses to love anyone and to become anyone's burden or to allow anyone to become her burden.
2. Does your character preserve a secret that he/she has told no other before and plans to take to their grave?
The fact that she came to America illegally and is actually working illegally as an assassin. Just her whole true identity is something she’s planning to take to her grave. Mainly because doesn’t want her two lives mixing. She wants to save her family from the pain she’s endured and doesn’t want anyone who knows her now know just how broken she is now.
3. Where was your character born? Where do they call their home?
Glazov, Russia. But she calls America her home now because there’s no way she ever wants to go back. Even though her life in America hasn’t turned out that much better than it would’ve been back in Russia.
4. Is there one shaping memory from your character’s past that current dictates whom they are at the current moment? What is that moment?
Probably the face of the first man she ever killed, and just how betrayed and hurt he looked. It’s exactly the moment she started hating herself, even though it’s also the moment she started defending all her actions as being ones she did to stay alive in hopes of one day being reunited with her family and being able to help them all into a better life. But now that’s pretty much a crumpled dream she can’t believe she ever put her hopes into. 5. Whilst spring cleaning your character stumbles upon an old momento of a memory past. Whom is it from and what memory do they recall?
A small rose that was hand crafted by her little sister when she was still in Russia. It reminds her of the moment that she gave it to Leonie and how proud she sounded. It makes her cry because she remembers how proud her little sister was of her and she feels like she’s let her and the rest of her family down. It kind of just reminds her of all the shit she’s gone through and how through everything she’s only ever thought of them and missed them. 6. Your character is preparing for a night out on the town. Where is he/she going, with whom, and what do they wear? 7. What is your character’s ideal concept of perfect happiness? Why?
She doesn’t really have one, at least not one that includes herself. She’s too convinced that she doesn’t deserve happiness after all that she’s done. But perhaps, if she had to have one, it’d be a world with no one like her in it, where her family, loved ones and all other people could be safe and do as they pleased without any harm being done unto anyone. It’s not that she expects it to ever happen, but it’s just the kind of world she would want for others, she reckons it’s what people deserve. 8.Has your character ever lied to protect a loved one from harm? Took the blame for another?
Yes, she has and it’s part of what got her stuck in the downward spiral that ended with her getting into the assassination business and not being able to get out. It’s either kill or get killed now. And although she’s not entirely convinced she deserves to be happy, she doesn’t quite want to die yet. She lied and lies about everything to do with her getting to America so no one else can be charged for everything she’s done and gone through and has taken the blame for another on multiple occasions just to give them a way out of the world she’s stuck in herself. 9.Would your character ever change him/herself to fit the ideals of another? For the sake of a relationship especially if they were extremely unhappy with the state of affairs?
Yes, perhaps because she’s not even quite so sure who she is anymore anyways. So a little change wouldn’t matter. And in fact it’s what she ends up doing most of the time in order to stay unnoticed as an assassin. Part of that is even in the hopes of staying off of the radar of fellow assassins so she can slowly disappear from that world. And usually she can get quite attached to someone, perhaps even enough to make her change herself for them. 10.Is there a word or phrase that your character overuses quite often? Are they well known for it?
Sometimes she'll slip up and end up swearing in Russian. And that's usually when she overuses the word Христос, which means Christ. But she's not exactly well known for it because she tries to hide the fact that she's Russian. Only those who know of her real identity will know about her over-usage of the word Христос.
