This is my contribution to Destroy Comics callout to artists, to take a stab at some studies of Paul Pope's THB.
I've been a fan of THB since it came out in 1994 when I was a little kid. I had the fortunate luck to live in Columbus, Ohio at the time Paul was living there and self publishing, so I have quite a bit of "old THB" books and memorabilia. Consequently, I've been doing studies of Paul's work for almost two decades.
"THB Panel" from Paul Pope's Giant THB 1.v.2. Top panel is Paul's original, the second is my study, drawn and inked as closely to Paul's as possible, and the second is more or less my riff on the panel more to my liking.
Tools: I inked with a 00 sable mix, and a 1 sized sable brush, using sumi ink. Paul typically uses a 000 sable hair, which is just a little too small for me. I'm honestly more comfortable with the 1. Paul often works with over sized originals, which is partly what allows him to use such small brushes.
Music: Black Angels, Simian Mobile Disco, and Daft Punk.
