The cover, the sound and the label (Floating Mills Records) convinced me that Self Improvement were a band from the late 1970s or early 1980s.

But reading the Bandcamp description I learned that Self Improvement is a currently active band that tried to make a record that sounded like The Spits and ended up with Suburban Lawns instead. Whether or not intentional, they also sound like Life Without Buildings.

The band is from Long Beach, CA (as were Suburban Lawns). Floating Mills Records is based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and reissued The Antelopes and The Stick Figures in 2021.

The Stick Figures were a band formed at the University of South Florida in Tampa. I learned about this on Bandcamp's "Best Reissues" article.

Wow. Rarely does a band check this many boxes for me. Clearly influenced by Pylon, Delta 5, The Fall, and Talking Heads, you could also argue that 1980s bands like The Woodentops, or the current release from Parquet Courts ("Sympathy For Life") owe a debt to The Stick Figures (although I doubt Parquet Courts heard this before their last two records). The band themselves cite The Buzzcocks and Orange Juice as influences.

Floating Mills (Pittsburgh) is responsible for this reissue (in vinyl, cassette and CD). This label only has two releases...listen to The Antelopes too.
