I accidentally listened to a song that brought up too many emotions and now I will be rambling.
There once was a person I called my sister. We have the same parents. We lived together for the first 14 years of my life. I have not seen her in 8 years and no desire to see her in the future. I have barely any memories of her, of having a sibling, and only a few of those are happy. At one point does she lose her title of sister?
She knows an ancient version of me from when I was 14. She missed my entire rowing career, my growth thru college, and now as an adult in grad school. She has missed my journey as a geologist and amateur wildflower photographer. She has missed 35% of my life. She doesn't know I'm probably the closest I've been distance wise to her in almost a decade and I have no interest in telling her. I'm not who I was and I'm assuming she's also a different person. I don't mention her to new people anymore, or if someone asks I might say "it's complicated" without thinking.
At what point am I allowed to just say I don't have a sister? I didn't start as an only child but I'm also not a sibling anymore and I think that's the only thing keeping me from saying it.
