Elizabeth Taylor and her husband Richard Burton chat with Sammy Davis Jr. and his wife May Britt following the 18th annual Tony Awards ceremony held at the New York Hilton Hotel, photo by Jim Mooney, May 24th, 1964. Richard was nominated that year for his acclaimed performance in Hamlet but lost to Alec Guinness for his work as poet Dylan Thomas in the play Dylan. Elizabeth and Richard were newlyweds at this point, marrying six weeks earlier in Montreal, Quebec, Canada following their scandalous, headline-making love affair while filming Cleopatra in Rome in 1962. Sammy and May were no strangers to controversy themselves, having caused a commotion with their then-daring interracial marriage in 1960.
