Week 37 Reading

Career of Evil by Robert Galbraith ★★★☆☆ I don’t like love triangles. I don’t like it when someone goes back to their asshole ex. And I don’t like it when a female character’s life seems to revolve about men, whether that’s doing everything for them or doing everything she can to show that’s she’s no less than them, and then making decision that are not well thought out. The writing was great. The mystery was good, and just like Strike you get distracted from figuring it out earlier because of everything that’s happening with Robin. I’m worried about Robin. I can understand that for her Matthew feels comfortable and safe, but... he’s not safe. Like, at all. I really need her to get away from him in the next book or I give up.

Good Omens by Neil Gaiman & Terry Pratchett ★★★★★ Reading a book after almost ten years is a little like reading it for the first time. I remembered some things, but the details were a bit blurry. A lot blurry, actually. Mostly I just remembered really loving this book. And I still do! Gaiman and Pratchett’s unique brands of weird are beautifully compatible, and they’ve created an amazing, little ball of sarcastic oddness, that somehow makes sense.

The Chessmen by Peter May ★★★★★ I’m so upset! Not one, but two characters I did not want killed got killed! And one of those took me completely by surprise! I just… I’m so upset, which was obviously the author’s intention. There’s a list on tumblr on how to make a character death really hurt, one of the points is: have the character (almost) reach their goal, and then kill them. Guess what?! It fucking works! Okay, now that that’s off my chest, on with the rest of this review thingy. This is the final installment in the Lewis Trilogy, and I think it’s my fave. The writing is excellent as always, the mystery brilliant (I figured it out only just before the MC did, which I think is the best time), and the new characters all felt very real. My favourite thing about these books will always be the scenic descriptions. It’s not easy to make these descriptions relevant, to not make them repetitive and tiresome, but Peter May really knows how to use them to set the mood: melancholic and nostalgic. The epilogue wasn’t really necessary, but it’s nice to know there’s some closure. And finally, George Gunn deserves better. He especially deserve for Fin to be a better friend and finally come over to eat that salmon.

Her Hometown Girl by Lorelie Brown ★★★★☆ After Career of Evil and The Chessmen I needed something light and fluffy. This wasn’t exactly light, but it was very sweet, and it was such a relief to read about someone getting out of a terrible (understatement) relationship, and healing, and moving on, and being happy. Tansy and Cai are living the wlw dream: a little house with a big yard and an adorable cat.

The Druid Next Door by E.J. Russell Continuing with the light and fluffy. It also has magic, and Fae, and a quest! And a magical tether (they can’t be more than 10 ft apart), i love those. I haven’t finished it yet, but so far it’s great.

Week 36 Reading

(this is what happens when I really want to read but nothing I read grabs my focus: I start 4 new books in 1 week, and finish none of them)

The Chessmen by Peter May This is the last in a trilogy, and so far I really like it. The victim has been revealed, but the mystery part hasn’t really started yet because the main character is kind of out of the loop on the investigation. I’m sure that’ll change soon.

Career of Evil by Robert Galbraith I read like a page of this one this week, so I don’t really have anything more to say about it than I did last week. (I really do need to finish it this week, though. This one and The Chessmen have to go back to the library on Thursday.)

The House by the Churchyard by Sheridan Le Fanu When is the plot going to start?! 50 pages in and all that’s happened is petty squabbles and parties. It’s a good way to introduce the characters and to portray their relationships to one another, but it’s getting a little boring.

Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett Rereading this one. The last time I read it was... 10 years ago? I think? So it was high time. Plus, they’re working on the show right now, which means I head to reread it anyway.

Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen Continuing my unplanned Jane Austen reread, though I’m trying to keep from really reading this one since I have library books to return this week, and they take precedence.
