trigger warning: human trafficking, cursing, implied euthanasia, clueless victim
Jun doesn't remember his last name.
But that's okay! At least he hasn't been culled. And here he's fed, given a safe place to sleep, and he has a purpose.
There is much to be thankful for.
When he first came to the BioTech factory, he was scared. But as he learned how to take care of the babies in the artificial embryos, helped take care of the little newborns, he started to get happier.
This was his purpose in life. To help with the creation of tiny babies, and send them to their loving families.
He is the metaphorical baby-bringing stork.
He has been here for four years.
When he gets back to the sleeping area, he catches sight of a new girl, sulking near one of the empty beds. She has an olive complexion, and dark hair with red dyed tips. A few years older than he is.
As one of the veterans in this unit, he feels he has the duty to help this new girl adjust.
Another boy, Matthew, grabs his arm to stop him as he walks towards the girl.
"Don't do it," He says quietly. "Just let her be."
Jun frowns. He glances back towards the girl. Sure, she's letting off extreme 'don't talk to me' vibes, but he's sure that she'll talk to him.
He wriggles out of Matthew's grip and steps over to the new girl.
"Hi!" He says in a cheerful voice. "I'm Jun! What's your name?"
She glares at him. Her eyes are dark red, probably a result of the latest pigment trend.
"It's okay to be confused and angry," He says earnestly. "Everyone is on their first day."
"What do you know?" The girl snaps back. "You're what, thirteen years old?"
"Fourteen." Jun corrects her. Then he frowns. "I think so."
The girl keeps glaring at him. "How are you so happy? We're all captives here, remember?"
"We're given a purpose," Jun tells her.
All of the new ones are like this. They don't understand their true purpose yet. But Jun can wait.
The girl scoffs. "Whatever, kid. Just go off and talk about your 'purpose' shit to someone else."
Jun turns away, defeated. Just then, the girl speaks again.
"Cara." He turns around, surprised. She scowls. "My name is Cara."
A smile spreads over his face. "Nice to meet you, Cara."
She rolls her eyes. "Whatever."
Jun walks away, his spirits lifted. Soon Cara will see how great it is to be here. He'll show her.
And then, finally, someone will understand him.
