What is a daemon? Like some spirit-y folk who hangs out 24/7 and says cheeky things? :p

Depends on the daemon, but mine does, yes lol

The term comes from His Dark Materials/The Golden Compass, where a person's soul lives outside of them in animal form and is called a daemon.

These daemons aren't necessarily souls, unless the daemian believes it is, and are more of a sort of imaginary friend, so to speak, at their most basic level. The animal form they take when settled will ideally encompass all of your personality traits, or at least as many as possible. They are mental companions, but they come from you. They are not external spirits or entities, and are ultimately created by you. They can gain some measure of pseudo-autonomy, but they are a part of you that you have chosen to make semi-separate.

Val would probably not interact much with other daemons or humans, except for my girlfriend and her dae. Most reactions to others would probably stay between us.

Yes, we are aware that it's one letter off from "Gilligan" and we both think that's a kind of ridiculous name for a dæmon. But Killigan has a kind of right feel to it, so that's what we'll be trying out. Maybe it will stick.

Not that anyone likely cares, as I never much talk about the dae on here.

Also, I think we're going to have another resettle soon.

The dae and I are trying to come up with a new name for him, and we're pretty close. We know it's Killi_an, so now it's just a matter of finding the "right" consonant to fill in that blank.

Anyway, this happened...

the dae: It sounds too much like "kill his son"

me: I was thinking more along the lines of "Konnichiwa, Killi-san"

the dae: That's actually worse. Don't call me that. Ever.
