A thing about Steven Universe that has been lost because of bad discourse is that the Diamonds are, in fact, quite interesting characters.

To start with Blue Diamond, she is someone who represents a person who is stuck in the past and it is constantly repeating the same circle of grief. Not being able to move on- she drowns other gems with her tears, being the gem that is the ¨emotion¨ of the Diamonds, often believing that she is the only one suffering.

In contrast to Yellow and White, she is more curious and gave more freedom to Pink with certain things, but at the same time she was the one that probably gave the harsher punishments to Pink when the Diamonds felt she was crossing a certain line.

It is interesting how she emotionally connected with Greg in ¨Steven's Dream¨ by both of them sharing their grief over a lost one. She feels sorry for Greg, believing the cluster is going to emerge soon and takes him away to ¨save him¨. She also chose to preserve the human zoo all those years because what it is left of Pink and it is the reason of why she didn't want to get rid of the Famethysts as well.

Yellow is a character that is a bit harder to understand because she isn't as emotionally open as Blue is, but she still has her complexity in her.

In contrast to Blue, Yellow is more strict and comes off as colder. She is always working trying to keep everything in line, and even trying to pick up the pieces left behind Blue, who gets frustrated with because she feels like Blue is constantly ignoring her role as Diamond.

In reality she deals with grief the same way that Blue is dealing with. However, instead of being stuck in the past like Blue is, she tries to do what she can to get rid of everything that reminds her of Pink. She wants to ¨move on¨ in a toxic mentality of ¨never to think about her again¨. This is why she wants to destroy the rose quartzes that are being kept in bubbles in the human human zoo or destroy Earth using the Cluster.

The truth is that Yellow Diamond blames herself for the shattering of Pink, believing that if she didn't give Pink her own colony planet, she wouldn't have been shattered. She doesn't want to deal with that guilt, so totally forgetting about Pink is the best solution for her. (¨Reunited¨)

On the last there is White Diamond: She believes that everyone is her and she is everyone. She is obsessed with perfection to the point that she believes she is always right in everything, and everyone should be molded around her ideas.

Unlike Blue and Yellow, White retreated on ¨her own head¨ after the lost of Pink Diamond. She would represent someone who is in denial of what happened to Pink and believes that this is a all a ¨little game that Pink is playing¨ and eventually she is going to come back to Homeworld at some point.

White has poorly defined identity on her own because all that she tries to be is to be ¨perfect¨ as a Diamond. This is why she breaks down so easily when she finds out that she was wrong about Steven being Pink. She becomes pink color because of how embarrassed she is, realizing that she was wrong and thus, not perfect.

As a whole the Diamonds along with Pink represent a ¨body¨ or an ego. White would be superego, Blue and Yellow would be the Ego and Pink represents the Id. The problems is that it is a very broken ego, which leads to the broken relationships they have in the series.

This would be a bit of a summary of the characterization of the Diamonds and their complexities in the show. I think more could be expanded upon, but i would like to leave it here since i think i made my point across. If anyone wants to add more feel free to comment or reblog addition to the post.

If they ever did do a prequel set during the gem wars or did some kind of diamond focused episode featuring some flashbacks involving Pink, would it actually be strange if they made Yellow, Blue and even White sympathetic and Pink unsympathetic? specifically talking about flashbacks set when they were in the process of colonizing Earth and if Pearl is to be believed pink did at least try but failed. Something that's been kind of on my mind if they explored their relationship further with Pink

It depends on the context but it would be weird and maybe off-putting if they made Yellow, Blue and even White sympathetic but not Pink because the Diamonds abused Pink to the point she thought they wouldn't care about her if she ¨shattered¨ herself.

I think it would be controversial for them to do that considering how Pink is potrayed as a victim of them

In reality, if beings like the diamonds existed, yeah i think the morally correct thing to do would be to kill them

But steven universe isnt reality. Steven universe is a woke animated kids show about growing up and lesbian aliens. The diamonds are used as a metaphor for kids coming from abusive/toxic families.

I don't think a good message to tell kids is 'you should kill your toxic family members.' I think its good for kids to learn forgiveness and self acceptance and love. Because people can and do change. Not all bad people need to die, sometimes they just need to be treated with understanding and a new perspective.

From the perspective of narrative power scaling, Luke Skywalker would seem to easily beat the gem empire. RotJ Luke has a Narrative Defense (a character's ability to resist changes or narrative effects targeted at them, "plot armor", the ability to avoid or survive attacks, but also the ability to avoid being tricked, convinced away from their beliefs, waylayed, or otherwise be manipulated by other characters) that, like most other protagonists, is quite high [surviving the rancor, surviving jabba's troops, not being turned to the dark side, surviving the fight with vader, surviving attacks from the emperor, etc] but his Narrative Offense (a character's ability to force narrative effects or changes to occur, the ability to defeat and kill, but also the ability to trick, convince and outsmart, the ability to generally force scenes to "go in their direction" and to cause scenes to occur at all) is also very high for a protagonist [forcing his way into Jabba's palace, bypassing all his defenses, killing the rancor and Boba Fett, getting to Yoda, getting to Darth Vader, beating Vader in the fight, convincing him to return to the light, etc]

On the other hand, as best as I can tell, the gem empire's Narrative Offense is quite weak for a Villian. Basically everything they did successfully occurred off screen (which makes it inadmissable for narrative power scaling as it's just lore, and not an actual event in the narrative), their in-show successes (based on my reading of the wiki) seem to be limited to temporarily capturing a couple characters and killing a couple people. Their Narrative Defense is also extremely weak (which isn't exactly unexpected from a Villian), with them seemingly easily being outwitted by the protagonists at every turn, including being talked out of their evil-ness in a 45 minute episode.

From this, we can conclude that Luke Skywalker (as of RotJ) would easily defeat the Gem Empire. Given the length of the gems' defeat in its original series, it's likely that Luke could defeat them in a 30 minute special, or perhaps even a 22 minute standard tv episode.

(note: I haven't seen most of Steven Universe, so all of my analysis of the Gem Empire was based on its wiki article. If the Gems' did anything especially affecting on screen that I missed do feel free to inform me)

I like how you take into account the narrative functions. My main concern is that Luke’s lightsaber is probably made of the same stuff as white diamonds arm. So while the likelihood of him defeating them is high, I’m much more concerned about the how.

I feel like the obvious argument against that is that “touching the gems doesn’t hurt humans, so it won’t hurt Luke, right? “ but Luke is not human. He comes from a completely different galaxy and time, and happens to look like us. It’s pretty well established that lightsabers are pure light, and very painful to most species in his galaxy. You have to keep in mind that the gems are also said to be light projections, and are likely from a different place and age. Considering the circumstances, they are likely within our own galaxy.

Regardless, I’m curious to see how plot armor saves Luke from an army of living light sabers.
