Take a moment and imagine the most annoying, ear-grating, headache-inducing white noise you can think of. Now multiply that by ten, then a hundred, then a thousand. You have just set a fairly decent benchmark for the sound that caused the end of the world. 

The Din tells the story of a world where this strange and very deadly sound was transmitted through almost every kind of technology across the globe thanks to some unknown weapon. When the search for the source proves fruitless the people instead turn to putting technology under quarantine or simply outright destroying it all. Now the world is in the midst of a sort of disease brought on by this sound, people are changing physically, becoming “misshapen”. We watch as the people slowly reinvent all the technologies that were once lost as well as see how they deal with the new problems that arise because of them.

The story here is fairly interesting, showing what could happen should our world suddenly be brought to its knees thanks to the gadgets and gizmos we so heavily rely on and then having to remove them. It’s sort of a re-telling of history as the people strive to recreate things like cars or even airplanes. It is also an interesting story showing how prejudice will always be a terrible problem no matter what day or age it comes in. There’s a lot of history dumped onto you in the prologue, which can be a bit intimidating, but it does help build the world after its destruction.

The art is apparently a revamped version of the original comic called Försupen that was published up to about 2014. With the relaunch came some well-polished art that shows an amazing understanding of light and shadows as well as the subtlety time weathering a person down. I wish I had been reading the original comic just so I could have seen how different the two are. Maybe there were some good aspects to it maybe there weren’t. At this point, I’m just glad to add The Din to my list of comics to read.
