P.S. 1. English is not my first language. This is a translation from my original language, so I apologize if it sounds a bit off.
2. I really want to read fics about the old villain Lin Daosheng, but no one writes them. I’ve only seen a few here and there, so… enjoy! ෆ
The building stands tall and proud, gleaming with the sheen of expensive, durable materials.
A future world where advanced technology governs every gap and pathway of this planet.
A billboard of “Liu Zhichuan,” that familiar face you once swiped past on your phone screen with bored indifference.
You look at your own reflection in the glass of a luxurious café from the outside — your expression dazed, intoxicated between reality and dream.
The face is familiar — the same shape, the same frame — yet somehow so different it makes you want to vomit.
The silver ring hanging around your neck catches the reflection in the spotless glass that refuses to welcome filth or anything lowly.
It stands as a symbol of luxury — and judgment — a divide between those exiled lands you once glimpsed.
A ring that signifies rank and power in “The Evil Ring.”
‘At least it’s not black.’
Otherwise, you would’ve died on the very first day you woke up… without a doubt.
After falling asleep on a night exhausted from working until your back curled, you wake up in a strange hospital. The first person you see is a nurse wearing a collar like a dog, calling the emergency response team when you yank out your IV line, letting blood run in a trail from your wrist, down your slender legs, soaking into the patient gown, and showing the behavior of someone who has lost their mind.
Because what happened? And why does the nurse in front of you call your surname as someone unknown, but your original name?? Why is she talking nonsense about being caught in the crossfire of an incident at some internship place, and coma from being shot in the head. You?? You who were just asleep and had gotten a job — why would you go to an internship place, when all you remember is the hard texture of the bed and the dim light.
You don’t know what kind of cruel joke fate is playing. Is God watching and laughing? You can behave strangely as you please, because the words you have been waiting for from the attending doctor finally come.
“ I am the neurologist responsible for this case. You, y/n, have awakened from a coma after severe head trauma. To be honest, this is something I have never seen before. ”
“ From the images and initial assessment, the head wound of this child was severe enough that there should have been no chance of recovery, or if recovery occurred, permanent serious disability. In this case, your child shows responses and has awakened. I cannot describe this with any other words than to say it is a medical miracle that has occurred. ”
“ Doctor… if you say it’s a miracle, then why does my child behave so strangely? Looking at us like strangers, not remembering even their own name or the circumstances that happened to them! ”
The middle-aged man gestures toward you, now wrapped in blankets, his voice trembling.
The doctor, with a saddened face, places a hand on the patient’s father’s shoulder.
The words, even though spoken as a question by Xue Jiacheng, do not require an answer to understand the situation. He is not a child, nor unaware, but merely a mechanism to deny reality, hoping the doctor’s answer will change, and everything will be just a dream.
He swallows the lump in his throat. That stubborn-looking face seems to witness a collapsing world, as you gaze at him with eyes deep, hiding sympathy in the chest.
“ The changes in behavior and emotional expression after this are considered normal effects. Confusion about self, not remembering father, mother, or other details — in short, it’s amnesia. ”
Everything is already clear. Not arguing or saying nonsense like
‘I just fell asleep. Woke up in a strange place! These parents aren’t even mine! Is this an isekai?’
That’s fine for you, who are somewhere unknown, knowing no one, unaware of any situation. But for…
The person assumed to be the mother of this body kneels on the cold hospital floor. Even the air-conditioning is not as chilling as the atmosphere surrounding her. She lowers herself before you, who are confused, her wrinkled face twisted in despair, hugging her child’s legs.
“ Oh, y/n… Xue y/n, my child, little angel. ”
You are now under the care of the ICU, to monitor complications. After verifying no other symptoms besides amnesia, relatives can take you home to establish familiarity and ensure safety. Recovery will take time, guiding a spirit that cannot be the same as before.
You realize that this world is “Manhwa The Evil Ring” while sitting in the car with your family on the way home. You assume you are in a mid-level area of the jurisdiction, not a divine city, and clearly not in an exiled land.
Gold, silver, copper, gray… black
The silver you possess is considered high-ranking.
The phone is a novel design, punk-style. Currency is “G” something… You are confused by the need to adapt your color to this world. Your family is perfectly normal. Mother works as a designer, father is chairman of a food company, and you — meaning the owner of this body — just graduated from university and are looking for a job. Judging by your parents’ demeanor, it seems the child might wander off the path sometimes, but they still support you with calm understanding.
So now, you walk through the large mansion with your close maid, exploring. Thinking about it, where does the story stand now? Has the fight with the Black Ring villains started yet? Or is it still the pre-story? You won’t interfere unless necessary. The main characters’ arc will certainly overcome obstacles. Even if you don’t intervene or announce, ‘Hey, I know the future!’ they will continue the story as scripted.
Today's physical therapy ended in exhaustion. After being in a coma for two months, your body struggles to do anything on your own. Still, you prefer the atmosphere outside the house, so you ask your parents to go out for a walk. Naturally, they refuse at first, but by pretending to be a little child again — which makes you shiver internally — it works. Subtle tricks, a hundred tricks in one, right?
But with the condition that two guards accompany you, keeping the distance you want but not too far to fail in protection. After all, the desires of the master’s child are paramount.
To be honest, this ring is incredibly annoying, whether bathing or changing clothes. But all you can do is complain.
The feeling of fabric tearing against the pavement isn’t as worrisome as the old colour kitten in your arms. Oh, it seems you just rescued it from the fanciest car you’ve ever seen in this world, arriving just in time as the kitty ran from the crowd, avoiding high heels that would have squashed it flat.
You are carefully lifted by your guards. They pivot and question as if the world is about to end, as if you’ve just created a problem for these older brothers.
A huffing sound comes from the side of the car that is the cat’s opponent. The driver’s door opens, polished shoes step out, a face messy and panicked about something charges at you. He grabs your collar.
“Think you’re doing what, with such childish tricks?”
That hurts. Feels like bones pressing together.
“This bastard! Let go of our Young heir!”
“Who do you think you are!”
The guards charge at him immediately before anything worse happens — which you don’t want to imagine.
“Who’s this? Haha, this is Mr.Lin Daosheng’s car, and he’s running late to his favorite book-sharing event, thanks to a basic joke — seeking attention from the rich, demanding compensation with fake injuries!”
Oh, you remember. Lin Daosheng. The villain in Manhwa The Evil Ring. You grit your teeth and swallow hard. The two guards beside you have frightened expressions before one of them tries to whisper for you to apologize quickly.
“Sorry for wasting your time. Please tell Mr.Lin Daosheng that I am truly sorry… I just jumped in to help this stray kitten without thinking. I had no ill intent as you accused. That’s partly my fault. And this kitten, see, it has learned its lesson too.”
You lift the old colour kitten wrapped in your shoulder cloth for the driver to see. Its head droops, letting out a sharp, piercing meow — probably because it’s still a child, the sound stings the ears.
“You too, apologize. Fairly.”
“You almost ran it over yourself. You saw it on the road, had a way to avoid it, yet you blame me without thinking.”
The driver’s face twists in disgust before he exhales, avoiding the embarrassment of admitting his own fault. In the end, he pokes your forehead twice, sharply.
“I’ll remember your face. If Mr.Lin—”
“Get in. Let’s go. I’ll really waste time because of you.”
Everything falls silent as a cold, authoritarian voice rises.
Ruby-red eyes, void of light, like deep pits pulling everything into them, meet yours through the front glass of the car. You break out in sweat, a feeling of revulsion spinning the world.
Because him. And Wu Yue… What he did to her… ugh…
You lower your head cautiously. If you act innocent and naïve, stupidly so, maybe he would let it pass, right? Like in the story, he’s not someone easily swayed by emotion. His love of books and philosophy… it speaks volumes. Even if the story didn’t reveal much about his character, he’s definitely a last boss.
The driver backs away from you, scrambles toward the car door, muttering excuses to whoever’s sitting in the back seat.
“Sorry, Mr. Lin. Because of someone that stupid, so—”
The true authority of the three cities raises a hand.
The driver falls silent, doesn’t even glance at you a second time, quickly closes the door, starts the car, and drives away from the corner where you stand.
A shiver runs down your spine, and you clutch the back of your head.
You do not look back. No way.
Interfering with this last boss is the worst thing in Manhwa The Evil Ring. Worse than being a Black Ring. You are certain.
You hope never to see him again, praying until the end of the world takes you away. Thank you.
You bite into the high-class custard-filled bread in your hand, your left palm wrapped around the torn snack bag, the other hand bracing against the public chair.
Three days ago, your parents had been both strict and indulgent, like bipolar swings. You weren’t used to such fresh, overwhelming care, whether from your father, mother, or the butler who had raised you since you were as small as a shellcap.
You had been confined, only allowed outside for physical therapy. But today, the person claiming to be your mother took you shopping. It was obvious from the middle-aged woman’s bitter expression. She said that in the past, you loved spending extravagantly—buying trendy clothes, going to bars, partying with friends until losing track of days, sleeping with different people, not coming home, getting into huge arguments with your father, even hitting your mother.
Wow… the “former” Xue y/n lived quite the life.
But you now were different—quieter, better behaved. You noticed the expression of Swei Wanting, who seemed unsure how to feel about your change in behavior after the memory loss. Even now, occupying her child’s body, you were surprised at how similar you were to the character in Manhwa The Evil Ring—not just in personality.
You bite into the bread still in the bag, leaning your head against the finely crafted wooden backrest. Watching birds dart through the air, clouds drifting along with the passage of time, the sunlight harsh enough to blind you. Your gaze drifts to the massive billboard declaring “Book Sharing Event.”
You sigh. Lin Daosheng haunts you. Those crimson eyes make it hard to breathe. You admit that you’ve dreamt several times in the past few days that he killed you, because of the anxiety that you lack the ability to control any upcoming events, whether you know them in advance or not.
When will Xue Wanting return, you wonder. After your mother met with a close school friend, they went to chat in a fancy restaurant not far from where you were sitting. At first, you stayed, but as she began interrogating you about the past—things the current you hadn’t done—it became unbearably annoying, so you stepped out to get some air in the nearby park.
“Nothing belongs to us—because even we do not belong to ourselves…”
You mutter absentmindedly, unsure why the words came out. But thinking of Buddhist philosophy, especially the concepts of Anatta and Sunyata, the core teachings in both Theravada and Mahayana, feels strangely fitting right now.
You wonder where the “former” Xue y/n is.
“Everything has completely changed… nothing is mine or yours.”
Poor Xue y/n—and even me. Life devoted entirely before seems to have vanished, as if it never existed. Absurd.
“This is something rare to hear from young people these days.”
A soft, polite elder’s voice interrupts. Your eyes search for the speaker before you adjust your posture, trying not to look even more like a daydreaming lunatic than you already do. After all, you never thought anyone would care about someone else’s life so much.
“They often chase what they believe is theirs, but never inquire into the mind itself, whether that—”
“—truly belongs to them.”
You finish his sentence. The elderly man smiles, a mixture of surprise and delight.
“If you don’t mind, may this old man sit and talk with such an amazing young person?”
You smile faintly, moving your bag from the seat and holding it in your arms instead.
He sits, clearly upper class. His wrinkled fingers tap rhythmically on a book, a habitual gesture.
“The philosophy you enjoy most—would you like to share it with this stranger?”
You pause, resting your chin on your hand, staring at the empty snack bag.
“‘One Truth Layered’… It’s not well-known. Most people prefer certainty. On the surface, you see only one layer, but if you dig deeper, there are many layers… and we are one of them.”
The elderly man’s wrinkled eyes curve like crescent moons. Pleased? Satisfied? You do not know. But if knowledge that once seemed meaningless in your past life can bring happiness to a nearing-death old man, that is enough.
“A young person worthy of respect… would you like to attend my book-sharing event next week, little one?”
You wonder if he’s 'that' person—. hoping the answer is no.
“People call me ‘Master Xie.’”
You smile brightly, screaming inwardly—why must everything relate to that despicable man all the time?
“Master Xie… really famous,” you laugh. “I didn’t think someone of such importance would notice me. But I’m not part of your circle, am I?”
The elderly man reaches into his thick coat, producing a finger-width card—a personal invitation. “Here. For you.”
“Master, I understand this is an event many want to attend, but you give me this privilege. I won’t be scolded by your fans, right? Ha ha.”
“Who would dare speak recklessly to a young person I pay attention to, hmm?”
“It’s a pleasure. I might attend, if I’m free… you understand?”
Damn it! Don’t make me feel like a sinful coward refusing an old man’s kindness!
“I mean I’ll go, Master Xie. Of course I’ll go.”
Master Xie—he didn’t leave. You continue talking for about half an hour. Strangely, your mother hasn’t returned, likely caught up in conversation… as are you.
The young person and the elderly man feel inexplicably at ease with each other. Sharing thoughts and life like a mixture of dreams and hell. You don’t want to let go of the moment when someone understands the complexity of your thoughts, which even you cannot fully grasp—or perhaps pretends not to, like a coward.
