After seeing that post about fandomstats.org I decided to see what came up for The Fall. A lot of the information wasn’t that surprising- like the high amount of femslash or the high amount of angst- but I was surprised to see that there’s a The Fall/Gossip Girl crossover and disappointed that there’s more Stella/Paul fics then there are Stella/Irene Adler fics.

I wonder if the fact that The Fall season three was only supposed to be five episodes but since they had so much material they made it six will have any impact on the pacing of the last two episodes.

Hey, you know what piece of symbolism I am lovin’ these days? That player piano in Westworld. That fucking player piano, man, gets me every time.

What makes it good symbolism to me is that a) it’s unexpected--i can’t remember the last time I saw a player piano onscreen and b) it’s such a perfect metaphor for the themes of the show. It’s a primitive robot, it plays a pre-written script, much like the hosts in the park. And the idea of playing out a script fits in nicely with this show that is a narrative about creating narratives. I dig it.

Having symbolism in your tv show elevates it above the standard police procedural, but taking it to the next level requires the symbolism be unusual, unique, and specific to the narrative. I don’t think what The Fall is doing meets my second requirement for good symbolism.

What are you talking about?! He does not romanticize vioence against women. It's Stella's dream and the MAIN thing is that it's a fucking nightmare. You girls are so blsck and white in your thinking you miss the main plot!

This is the post that has this anon in a tizzy. But let’s break this down line by line!

Let’s take a look at the word“Romanticize”. According to Merriam-Webster, romanticize means“to think about or describe something as being better or moreattractive or interesting than it really is : to show, describe, orthink about something in a romantic way” (x)

The scene opens with Stella lounging inthe bath, surrounded by candles. There is no way that anyone can denythat this isn’t a romantic setting.

Yes, because Cubitt chose to write itthat way.

As far as we know, the dream was prettyirrelevant to the narrative. Paul doesn’t pose a threat to Stella,he’s in the hospital and then psychiatric ward claiming amnesia. Itwould have made more sense if a dream of this nature happeneddirectly after Paul broke into her hotel room. But I digress.

Cubitt made a conscious narrativedecision to set Stella’s violent murder nightmare in a romanticsetting. He could have framed it another way, set her nightmare somewhere else, made it not as violent as being held under water.

For example, he could have writtenStella a dream where she was trapped in the trunk of Rose Stagg’scar. It would have accomplished the same thing (subconsciously linkedPaul and Stella’s assumed father in a nightmare setting) while alsotouching on Stella’s guilt towards feeling that she lead Paul toRose.

But no, he chose to set her graphicdream in a highly romantic setting.

Did you know that it’s possible tounderstand the plot while still analyzing it and acknowledging thatit could have been done better? There isn’t anything wrong withconstructive criticism. It was a badly set scene. On close analysis,it doesn’t fit except to be pretty and violent.

Since they're reusing Stella's wardrobe in s3, (the zipper skirt from the s1 finale) can we bring back the leather skirt and pink blouse combo?

What bothers me about Cubitt is his obvious hard on for Gillian Anderson. First it felt like he did something knew, and he clearly isn't he is just as informed by society's rules as all men. He even expressed having troubles knowing if Stella is attractive or if it's just one's view of Gillian. Who even fucking says that? Respect your co worker idiot. Then he had the nerve to pan the camera over her body like she's a piece of meat. Starting from the waist and slowely working the camera up:(

I haven’t read wherever he’s said this about GA but it sounds really YIKES. I know he said something like he wanted Stella to look tired but Gillian always looks gorgeous and I mean, Gillian is gorgeous, but she can look tired. She’ll probably be the first one to tell you that.

Listen, I love Gillian Anderson. I think she’s an intelligent and absorbing actress and would happily watch her in literally anything and everything. That said, it’s really telling that Cubitt conceived this project with her in mind. What would this story look like if Stella Gibson were (pick one or more of the following):

black

latina

Asian/Pacific Islander

50-100 lbs heavier

a practicing Muslim

an out lesbian

10 years older

a trans woman

See what I’m saying? Gillian deserves to have great projects written around her, certainly, but Cubitt had the opportunity to include more women in his storytelling. And even the ones who fit these other categories (Dani, Reed) don’t get those parts of their story told, not really. So Cubitt wanted this story to empower women…but which women, exactly?
