Today at Pemberley, The 2nd of August:
Word of Lord Charles’s planned lecture on chemistry was well received by Pemberley’s neighboring families with the Darcys receiving many thanks for their willingness to host. Among those who went to London for the season, several had previously attended one of Lord Charles’s lectures and their accounts fueled the growing enthusiasm for the event.
As the Earl Fitzwilliam and Lord Charles intend to visit the mines tomorrow to collect information on how their new design of lamp faired under practical use, the lecture will not take place until the day after tomorrow.
However today, Pemberley’s housekeeper, Mrs. Reynolds was already preparing the largest room for use during the lecture.
Mrs. Reynold’s preparations primarily consisted of exchanging the favored furnishings of the room for those held in lesser esteem as she had been informed that Lord Charles intended to demonstrate methane gas’s combustable qualities. Hard on the heels of that revelation, she had learned that commonly Lord Charles’s lectures in London included explosions of all sorts and she had begun to plan accordingly.
