What I wanna know is - who did Tom Cavanagh piss off that they brought Barrowman in instead of letting Tom sing? I am kinda sick of seeing Barrowman's face at this point. Talk about overused. To add insult to injury, Vanity Fair called Duet the "best musical episode ever" and one of the reasons it was better than Buffy's was that they "didn't make non-singers like Tom Cavanagh sing." Not like he used to be a Broadway star or anything. Ouch.
Tbh, I like Barrowman. Like, I want Merlyn to just die already in Arrowverse, but I don’t mind them using him for purposes like this. But ouch @ the Tom Cavanagh bit. Vanity Fair clearly has no idea what the fuck they’re talking about, dear lord.
Not everyone loved Once More With Feeling, but there’s a reason why that episode has a permanent spot in TV history. I don’t know what they’re smoking at VF, but I would much rather listen to Alyson Hannigan recite her singing lines, and a bunch of original songs written specifically for all the actors’ registers and voices that were about their characters’ struggles in a TV musical episode, than three or four perfectly executed musical numbers about a fictional world having no real connection to the characters I actually care about.
This episode was nice, but no one will remember it in a year or two, and as an original musical episode it was half-assed at best. Especially compared to something like the Buffy musical. I don’t know how much The CW is paying VF, but they need to roll back on those checks a bit.
