Gustav was a stubborn kid but he just wanted to be a dragon rider, to be accepted or to belong somewhere. Like Hiccup once felt. Thing is, unlike with what Hiccup had, Gustav's parents didn't seem to care about him or what he did. Unlike Hiccup, he tried to follow someone else's path instead of learning his own. He let his resilience and stubbornness overlook common sense and advice and he looked up to Snotlout whose way of doing things and self-oriented mode of teaching was not for a kid with mental vulnerability.

He deserved and earned that position of being the leader of Auxiliary Riders

I love that they put Tuffnut counting on his fingers (and later speaking aloud as he does it) in the background during this scene. I don’t believe for a second he’s serious, but it was a nice touch.

This guy brought smothering smokebreaths to Berk. He also delivered false info about Dagur's weapon a few episodes back. He also brought to Berk baskets upon baskets of blue olienders. And I have a suspicion that he was the "excellent authority" Dagur mentioned who delivered the news of Berk having made peace with dragons to the Berserker chief in the first place. I'm starting to see a lot of red flags here which were previously unseen even though he wasn't created to be an antagonist for RoB/DoB.
