So I've devised a thesis on Muppets

It should be self-evident that trying to classify Muppets by species is more trouble than it's worth. Therefore, I have developed a system of sorting Muppets into four distinct character archetypes.

1. The Standard Muppets - Most Muppets fall into this category. These are the Muppets who are well aware of the inherently silly nature of their existence, and are capable of rolling with it, perhaps even reveling in it, as Fozzie does. Gonzo and Rowlf are also likely Standards.

2. The One-Note Muppets - One-Notes can sometimes be hard to distinguish from Standards, but the key difference lies in their specialization in drawing comedy from one particular trait. Miss Piggy is a diva, Oscar is a grouch, et cetera. At times, this single-purpose nature can lead them to be less capable of (intentional) comedy than their peers.

3. The Straight-Man Muppets - These Muppets are defined by an insistence on taking themselves and everything around them seriously - probably more than is ideal. Naturally, this sets them up to be made fools of on a semi-regular basis. In many ways, they can be said to be the opposite of Standards. Sam the Eagle is an obvious example of such a Muppet, but I would also count Kermit among them. ("THE FORG?!," anyone?)

4. The Chaos Muppets - The thankfully smallest category, which includes Animal and the Swedish Chef in its ranks. Chaos Muppets are defined by one particular quality - each one, without exception, wakes up every morning and chooses violence.
