The Question

It’s getting late, the sun is setting over the forested horizon surrounding the cozy little city of Arcadia Oaks, and most people would be heading home or out for the night. The curator of the local library is doing the former and locking up his place of work before heading out and towards his secluded woodland home. It seems to be an uneventful night, at first, like any other as he walks the well used paths from place to place, taking his time to enjoy the warm twilight. Occasionally waving at a few familiar faces as he passes. Though, a few minutes in to his scenic route path, a strange scent seems to follow him, and one that seems so familiar yet he can’t place his finger on where it’s from. He’d glance around a moment before shrugging it off as he sees nothing out of the ordinary. But the scent seems to follow him, nagging at the back of his mind, trying to pull at a memory he’d long forgotten to no avail. And the more that it lingers the more on edge he becomes, because something deep down is telling him that it doesn’t mean anything good.
Elias picks up his pace and heads toward the path hidden in the woods that leads to his home, back tensing and teeth clenched as he keeps his eyes forward. Maybe it’s nothing. Maybe he’s just being paranoid. He’s known for bouts of it when things get too quiet in his life. Either way his instincts are just telling him to get home and then he’ll be safe. He hopes. Logically one would try to lose a stalker in a winding path through the city or the woods, but seeing as how he’s fairly new here he wouldn’t trust his own way around to get back home if he did that. So he’s just going to head home and hope for the best, sprinting when he thinks he’s getting close.
