this story was just very middle of the road and i don't have much to speak on it honestly. it's my first time (or at least as far as i can recall) reading this kind of slightly silly chick-lit drama but i was expecting more. it was not that messy and i saw the big twist at the end coming (and i am someone who will usually fall on the floor shocked at what others claim to be the most predictable plot twists). the characters were not too bad; samantha, the main character, was likeable enough. anya is a non-character because she is so transparent. timothy is boring and not captivating as a love interest. her "best friend" raina was incredibly unlikeable throughout (i also found it quite laughable that she went out of her way to judge samantha for her actions/frivolity considering she must have been decently comfortable herself working as a lawyer; meanwhile samantha and her mother are fighting to pay off debts in the middle of a recession. but okay, she's such a good friend...).

generally, there was a lot of potential with the fraud squad, but it didn't quite live up to expectations in the end. my gut said 2.5* but i'll round up to 3.

new blog and can i just say i fucking hate new money people trying to get into old money circles and i know those terms are cliche and tacky but omfg as someone that grew up in those circles, i am just so fucking fed up with people writing entire books trying to fake being like me and trying to worm their way into my circles like fuck i literally have more respect for someone who works at mcdonalds as long as they are honest about themselves like i'm not lying and scheming trying to befriend billionaires when i'm not one of them it's so ugly and tacky and low class and embarrassing and frankly OBVIOUS and never works like fuck!!!!! just stop it!!!!! u had a different upbringing and that's ok!!! lying about it just makes you look more insecure than you might actually be and is just never a good look for anyone

Standard caveats that this is a WIP, rough draft, etc etc, but this is the start of the Anya/Raina hatemance and will likely be the first fic for The Fraud Squad posted on AO3! (Unless anyone else wants to read and write for it? Hint hint? ;) )

Content warnings for mentions of divorce and domestic violence.

“I can give you advice, or I can just listen. Which do you want?” Mom asked. Her voice was cool. Placid, even. Except that Anya had seen Mom maintaining her composure even during the worst of the divorce, when Dad had screamed and shattered two vases against the wall. The slow drip of water on the crumpled flowers had covered Anya’s footsteps as she crept to her room in order to hide, but not before glimpsing Mom’s carefully blank face, all emotion shuttered so it couldn’t be used against her. Anya gave a shaky laugh. "I don't want to talk about it." "Then what do you want?" "I want—I want to fix it," Anya whispered. "I want to be friends again. But I don't know if that's even possible."
