It’s been a while since I wrote (sort of) well not PG exactly.

Indie 5-0 with Todd Omohundro

Todd Omohundro is no stranger to music or performance. With his impressive resume, like performing with Chicago, the Philly Pops, and Pink to name a few of his accolades, his musical genius and masterful writing is what makes him both unique and versatile. He’s loved music since he was a boy and was able to connect with his Dad over music and musical theatre. His newest album, The Future is Calling, is his own original jazz-rock sound that encapsulates his musical prowess. 

We got the chance to speak with Todd in this edition of Indie 5-0. 

Let’s dive in:

What is your favorite song on your album, The Future is Calling?

I remember reading an interview with Billy Joel and they asked him what his own favorite songs were and he said exactly how I feel.... my songs are like my children they are all so different and unique and I love them all. But to expand on that... songs are like little windows to one emotion and who would want to go through life feeling one emotion all the time? So I am proud of all the songs on my album "The Future Is Calling " - they are little pieces of my soul and emotions and personality. And the people who have heard my album love different songs... I will say that the most positive response I have received is for 'Taste Of Honey' - I think it's possible within the grand scheme of things that we captured some really cool blues rock magic when we recorded that track.

What was your inspiration for this album?

This album came out of the most excruciating pain I have ever been through in my life. I had shoulder surgery in late 2020 and the anesthesiologist gave me too much anesthesia and it almost killed me. It threw my GI tract completely out of whack and I honestly thought I was going to die. But in addition to all of this medical nightmare I was going through, I had emotional depression like many people from the pandemic and George Floyd and my most beloved dog of my entire life passing away Feb. 6 and then Pennsylvania got hit with one of the worst cold heavy snowfall winters in the last 50 years... it was an absolutely BRUTAL 8 months of my life. I had severe anxiety for the first time... No words can describe that horror you feel non-stop. I would set a goal to stay alive for the next 15 minutes. I am sure to most people that sounds ridiculous but to anyone who has ever felt true anxiety and depression they know EXACTLY what I am talking about. You get very REAL about your life and small simple pleasures and what matters and what does not matter. So the 6 new songs on my album are basically me trying to inspire myself and keep going and express my truths.

What was the writing process for The Future is Calling like?

Not particularly fun because I was in such a rough place physically and emotionally. Usually I write out of joyful splendor but this album was written out of pain so I kind of had to force myself to go to my piano and create even though I felt like death warmed over.

Who is your biggest musical influence and why?

I LOVE SO MUCH MUSIC and so many different styles ( like most people) but hands down I would say the jazz rock band Chicago. When I heard their first couple of albums as a child I had chills and lit up like a firefly in June. Rock, Pop, Jazz, Blues, Classical …a horn section that was an integral part of the musical magic... it was a blend of instruments and styles that spoke to me beautifully and made me happy to be alive. Honestly the greatest compliment I can ever imagine receiving is being included in the legacy of great music that includes a horn section as a huge part of the sound: Chicago, Earth Wind & Fire, Blood Sweat & Tears, Maynard Ferguson, Bill Chase, Certain Beatles songs like Penny Lane and Got To Get You Into My Life etc etc. For reasons unbeknownst to me, great music that has a horn section is absolute pure music magic to me.

Which song was the easiest song to write? Which was the hardest?

Not to get all "whooey whooey" but “The Future Is Calling" basically wrote itself in about 15 minutes and felt like it was "given to me" and I just happened to be the one who wrote it down and brought it to life as a song. But it's definitely a wellspring of several emotions and thoughts that swirl around in me ALL THE TIME like a) one of the greatest gifts we all have is to start each day anew... b) thinking that you DON"T have all the answers and being humble and remaining open to new ideas c) a better future IS calling so how do we get there from here? d) the children of the world need us to make changes. The hardest song to write was "Drowning In Content" because its autobiographical and I would feel emotional every time I played it and worked on it. I think somewhere inside of me was this massive fear that I would die literally drowning in content with 3 TVs on and abandoned and all alone. Sounds like a sci-fi movie of despair and loneliness I know... I think many people have a fear of abandonment so this is not only being abandoned but also being completely overwhelmed by non-stop content that intrigues and stimulates your mind but doesn't make you feel loved or connected or cared about in anyway shape or form.

He still looked tall from a distance. He was wearing his blue jacket and jeans, his usual sneakers. It could have been Lilith's imagination, but his hair looked messier than it had done earlier.

"Isn't that Hans?" Lilith pointed at the boy and Chloe followed her movement, but by that time he had vanished inside the train.

"We can walk between the carriages and see for ourselves" she said. And they did, and before Lilith told Chloe to give up and sit somewhere else, there he was! Sitting by a window, his earpuds already tugged in his ears.

"Hans!" Chloe exclaimed. And so the ride went on.

Hans was the first to leave the train that night, Chloe went off on the next stop. Lilith remained for two more stations, and she couldn't help but gaze into the night and dream on, dream that Chloe would be there tomorrow too.
