Joshua POV

“You don’t have to pay attention, but you could at least look like you are.” Justin said. He stood on the other side of the square, but Joshua could hear him anyway. One of the benefits of sharing senses.  With a sigh, Joshua did as Justin asked and turned his attention to the Escort.

She spoke of the district and its charm. Joshua rolled his eyes. How could the people of the Capitol manage to say a compliment in such a way that it became an insult? Joshua found Justin across the square. He had his eyes trained on the Escort.

“So serious.” Joshua whispered. He allowed Justin to listen in. Justin looked over at Joshua and gave him a look.

 Usually the kids of the same age and gender were together during the Reaping’s but that had been changed in some cases. Joshua and Justin were one of those cases.

“This year - as I am sure you have heard – all of the names will be in one bowl.” The Escort said. “Two people will go into the games together. Accomplices. This year, two tributes from the same district can become Victors.”

She made her way to the giant bowl that held the names. She unfurled the paper and read the name.

“Ashlyn Rose Gentum.”

“No!” The single word made the hairs on the back of Joshua’s neck stand on end. The woman that yelled was older and stood behind the peacekeepers. Tears were already leaving streaks on her face. Joshua turned his attention away from the woman as the girl whose name had been called walked up to the stage. She hadn’t made it up to the podium when a boy called,

“I volunteer as accomplice.” The boy pushed through the crowd as he made his way to her. As soon as he caught up, he reached for her hand. The two went up the rest of the stairs holding hands. The Escort said something about them, then went back to the bowl.

 Joshua didn’t watch the Escort. Instead he found Justin again. He had his mouth flattened into a straight line . The paper crackled as the Escort unrolled it. Joshua remained focused on Justin. He didn’t want to watch the Escort. Everyone watched them. They had the spotlight, and they didn’t deserve it. Joshua didn’t even look up when the Escort read his name.

“Joshua Mase.” A multitude of emotions ran across Justin’s face as he turned to Joshua. Joshua looked away as he made his way up to the stage. It didn’t matter, he said to himself. His heart rate disagreed as it sped up with every step.

“Smile.” Justin said. He sounded so close. Joshua forced a smile onto his face. The Escort no longer had the spotlight- he did. His smile grew bigger as he made it to the stage.

“Congratulations, Joshua!” The Escort said, shaking his hand.  She turned back to the crowd. “Any volunteers for Joshua’s accomplice?”  

“I volunteer.” Justin didn’t wait to be recognized. He moved through the crowd, walking slowly. Joshua could almost see the gears turning in Justin’s head as he climbed the stairs. He reached the stage and he shook the Escorts’ hand, saying his name. The Escort blinked as Justin stood beside Joshua. They hadn’t decided to wear matching outfits, it had just happened. The Escort looked from one to the other, as if trying to find a difference in their appearances. Then, remembering her duty, she turned back to the crowd.

Joshua stopped listening. He didn’t care. He didn’t care what happened in the reaping or in the games. Justin would make it home.

And hopefully he would too.
