As the sound of the decade starts falling into place, we're seeing more crossovers from other charts, with Bobby Lewis and Patsy Cline crossing over from the R&B and country charts respectively. In addition to that, we also have some staples of the previous decade appearing on this poll, such as the inclusion of doo-wop, folk staples and The String-A-Longs' instrumental track.

From the 1982 album Way Back, here's the Jive Five with "Callin' Cades."

The leader of the group, Eugene Pitt, passed away last month. Here's Daniel E. Slotnik for The New York Times:

Mr. Pitt formed the Jive Five in the late 1950s with Jerome Hanna, Thurmon Prophet, Richard Harris and Norman Johnson — four friends with whom he sang on the streets of Brooklyn. Like many young vocalists of the era, they sang doo-wop, the romantic, harmonic brand of pop music that became popular alongside early rock 'n' roll and contributed to the sound of soul.

Mr. Pitt's rich, rangy voice became the group's centerpiece, sometimes soaring to a falsetto over the deeper harmonies of the others. The group was often billed, on record and in concert, as Eugene Pitt and the Jive Five or the Jive Five featuring Eugene Pitt, and Mr. Pitt remained the leader, and sometimes the only original member, as others came and went.

Although there's only reason I or anyone else of my generation know who he was:

Beginning in the mid-1980s, the Jive Five recorded memorable jingles for the children's television network Nickelodeon, introducing a new generation to doo-wop's sound.

Always puts a smirk on my face to imagine my older brothers lumbering across the gym floor, at their high school dances. (My older sister, on the other hand, comported herself always with poise and elegance.) Plus I really dig those sweaters and think I could knit myself one if I put my mind to it.
