“What, pray tell, are you doing?”
I turned around, eyes wide like a deer caught in headlights. I tried shoving the thing behind my back subtly but he was having none of it.
“Nothing!” I exclaimed, praying to whatever deity there is for him to be repulsed of the kitchen turned war zone and leave me to my expense.
His eyebrow was raised as he crossed the threshold (Is there even any deity to pray to?!), forcing me to reveal what I was hiding.
I rolled my eyes as he stared at the misshapen lump that was supposed to be a cake- (well, chocolate cake but even I couldn’t tell what this thing is). “Yes, yes.... I know I’m not good at baking- will you stop poking the lump?” I scolded him as I smacked his fingers away.
“Why bother making such...monstrosity when you know you’d be ridiculed for it? Is this even food?” He asked as he stared at me, curiosity evident in his eyes as he tried enough not to poke fun at me when he saw the tears forming from the side of my eyes and so I averted my gaze, anything but to look at him.
“‘Twas meant to welcome you to the tower,” I mumbled, trying hard not to fidget under his scrutinizing gaze. “No one wanted to do it so...well, you’re a part of the team now, so why shouldn’t you be welcomed?”
He was silent. If the situation hadn’t been embarrassing enough for me, I would’ve rejoiced that I had done the impossible but rather than being joyous, I felt my face heating up as I reached for the lump to dump it into the garbage chute when I felt the load being freed from my grasp.
I turned around, gobsmacked at him. “Loki!”
He cleared his throat as he placed the monstrosity away from my reach (damn these gods and their freakishly tall genes) “Now, dearie, there’s no need for such dire actions,” he said as I could see the faintest of...was that a blush? AND a small smile?
“I’m sure I can think of ways as of the use of this...erm, lump?” he turned around, waving his free hand. “Do clean this place, darling. I would be upset when Thor’s friends accuse me something which I haven’t done.”
I let out an exasperated sigh. (Should I just give up trying to understand this guy?) The one time I tried to do a good deed and this is what happens.
“Oh,” I faced the doorway to see his head peeking in. “Next time, please do not attempt such if you lack experience with it, hmm? It retains a little bit of your dignity. Andalsothankyouforwelcomingmeandfortheeffortofbakingacakeitmeansalot.” The last words were rushed as he vanished from my sight. Nonetheless, a huge smile crept on my face.
