when do you think thorne starting having feelings for cress and when do you think he started falling for her? i love those two and your head canons about them!

I definitely think something inside of Thorne started stirring when they were lost in the desert. From what we know of Thorne’s childhood and upbringing, he’s never had to rely on anyone for anything before. So it would come as a big shock to his system when he not only goes blind, but is stranded in a very dangerous situation. I think him being so vulnerable and then having to rely on the pure cinnamon roll that is Cress, put him in a situation where he was more susceptible to forming feelings. 

There’s also the fact that Cress is just an open and honest person. I can see Thorne being thrown off by someone who was so unguarded with their feelings and unapologetically romantic. Especially since Thorne had been living a pretty unsavory lifestyle for a good number of years before Cress (and Cinder) meets him. I can’t imagine he’s run across anyone quite like Cress before. I can see him finding it both peculiar and refreshing. 

Cress (and Cinder) also give Thorne a great sense of stability. Sure, running for your life from a sadistic evil queen has it’s drawbacks, but perhaps this is the very first time in Thorne’s life where he has found someone/people he can actually depend on. When Thorne tells Cress not to stray far away and she replies by telling him that she would never leave him…. well, I think that just might be the very first time anyone’s ever told him that and beyond that, he believes her because she’s never given him any reason to doubt that. 

There are so many little moments when they are in the dessert that Thorne reaches for Cress, sometimes it’s for his own purposes like to keep from tripping or to get her attention, but there are times when he wants to touch her to offer comfort, warmth, security. Even blind, there are often times where Thorne can sense Cress’s nervousness or unease and he’ll slide a hand over for a comforting touch--which is pretty spectacular if you think about it.

When Thorne is talking to Jamal and he realizes that Jina has taken Cress and is so overcome with rage that anyone would treat Cress less than, just because she’s a Shell, shows just how much he cares for her. But, to me, the biggest tell of Thorne’s blossoming feelings is when Jamal tells him that Cress saw him with Darla and he just gets this twist in his gut and thinks about how hurt Cress must have been. 

Honestly, and I realize I am saying this as a hardcore Cresswell shipper, I think Thorne began falling in love with Cress when he asked her to look out the window of the satellite to tell him what she saw and she starts blabbing about how beautiful everything is. Even in his frustrated state, he can’t help but be entertained by her enthusiasm for sand. But, of course, he would deny that he had any romantic feelings for Cress until that kiss from Luisa-Cress fried his brains and made everything click into place. 

There’s that John Green quote which I think is quite apt in describing how Thorne’s feelings evolved for Cress. “I fell in love like you would fall asleep: slowly and then all at once.”
