August 16, 1966: Cream play the Marquee for the first time and it was a sweaty ordeal. Even though they broke the club's attendance record that night and many were turned away at the door, there's a lovely pre-fame feel to Ginger's banged-up cymbals and Jack's busted old Fender VI 6-string (before the paint job by the Fool). Barefooted, Eric is playing a double cutaway Les Paul Special, borrowed from Eddie Clayton (who opened for Cream with his band the Eddie Clayton Squares). What happened to the gorilla is unknown, but he was quickly dropped from the band. [photos: Tommy Arvidsson]
"The initial agenda was that Cream was going to be a dada group. We were going to have all these weird things happening on stage and it was going to be experimental and funny and rebellious. We said at the time it was going to be anti-music. But in the end we got such a kick out of just going to the instrumental part and seeing what would happen, that’s what we became known for."
