Jimmy Cliff - The Harder They Come (1972)
On this day—July 7, 1972—the soundtrack to the film The Harder They Come by Jimmy Cliff and others was released. Reggae singles recorded between 1967 and 1972 by Scotty, the Melodians, the Maytals, the Slickers, and Desmond Dekker comprise half the album, but the emotional heart is a handful of performances by Cliff, both studio recordings and on film. Featuring recordings of “You Can Get It If You Really Want,” “The Harder They Come,” and the gorgeous “Many Rivers to Cross,” the album is noted for having played a large part in popularizing reggae in the US, and it regularly appears on lists of the greatest albums of all time.
