Writing, True North, NaNoWriMo, and All That Jazz…
When NaNoWriMo came around, I embarked on a fresh story (Gina Ire) and added a bunch of other things onto my plate, putting my main project (The New Apprentice) on hold. I have been working on it intermittently, but it hasn't been a priority this month (even though it's on the top of my goals list).
Now, I'm a hard-core woman of science, but I'm also a hard-core spiritual. So today something happened, which brought back TNA into my mind and made me really sad.
So I asked for a sign from the universe: If this is what you want me to do, please give me a sign!
While rifling through my digital notebook, I realized: Today's the first anniversary of my beautiful WIP! It was exactly on 20th November 2018 that I jotted down the first vision for TNA: She sat on the bench by the little quiet lake with [another character]...
I know this not the fanciest first line in the history of first drafts, but that's not the point. The point is: Suddenly, I can't believe why I'm doing all this other stuff I'm doing. I mean, I understand it, on an intellectual level. I understand why I took on the nano project. I needed it to get my writing flowing again. I get why I'm reading books and researching skills I need to develop for my future.
I get why I'm trying to meet my deadlines and doing creative writing exercises and trying to finish reading Hamlet within the month… I get it. I get all of that. It's all good and brilliant and perfect.
And still, everything feels like a candle flame to the fire of TNA.
I know I'm not the only one who feels like this, I know that writers often feel like this about their WIPs. Writing is a calling. Literally. We're called to write. And we must answer that call, or else our soul won't be satisfied.
My soul is far from satisfied right now. My soul is in in full-blown rebellion. It wants an answer.
In two or three years time, I'll have a degree in literature, but will I also have a book published?
I want the answer to be a big fat YES.
So starting tomorrow, I’m going to do TNA first thing. And NaNoWriMo or not, I'm going to do it every day until it's redrafted, and revised, and edited into its best possible version.
I'm announcing it on writeblr so I actually remember my intention. And, it's also like shouting it out to the universe/muse/writing genie: Yes, I'm taking this thing on! I'm all in! This is happening, so you'd better pour in your magic and I'll pour in mine.
If you're someone who's been making legitimate but dream-killing and soul-crushing excuses to avoid working on your beloved WIP, consider this your sign.
Pause and think. Where's your true north? Realign. What’s your biggest dream? Recommit. Your future self will thank you for it.
I hope if you're in a similar situation, you're going to get off the internet right now and actually put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard) and JUST. START. WRITING.
TNA is my true north. What is yours?
