My ultimate wish (aside from world peace and such) is to be able to do what I need to do. Every day.

That’s why “Just do it” doesn’t resonate with me. You might just do it today, but can you get fit in one day? Write a book in one day? I don’t think so.

I think one thing Anki and Duolingo shares (aside from being one’s primary vocabulary-learning tool) is how much hell you get if you miss a day.

Duolingo has a bird threatening you every day that if you don’t do your lessons it will fly through your window and murder your family.

Anki doesn’t warn you. It just expects you to answer to it every day. And every day you don’t, your debt piles up, until you come back and realize you owe 1.5 million dollars.

My school requirements are so chill and somehow I’m more advanced in the lessons than 70% of my classmates.

Somehow I have a problem for having no problems. Am I in the eye of the storm and should I prepare for the rainfall and floodwater?

Trying to become obsessed with my goals to avoid wasting time is like trying to cook a medium-rare steak by throwing it in the fire. Or thinking that stretching your dollar is spending all your money on one thing.

Last time I got obsessed with something productive (i.e. Russian language learning) that was all I ever did. It was way better than my usual fiction addictions, but I didn’t allot as much time to the more essential things like my studies. Discipline and a time allocation plan would’ve been more useful overall.
