Willow Elfriede Hagan had many names.
The Restless, Weeping Willow, Nightshade, and other plant based titles that she always found tacky. She didn't see the reason to give herself a nickname if she was supposed to work in the shadows anyway.
She was an assassin, she killed who she was paid to kill and nothing else. This whole 'painting your name in the victim's blood to let everyone know it was you' fad was ridiculous in her opinion. She worked quick and quietly and that's what mattered. Her clients were certain to refer her and that's how she got her next task.
She usually took on anyone assigned to her. Noble men and women, old ones, the sick, the married, parents, the list was long. The only targets she refused to touch were children. There was no justification for killing a child, wicked or otherwise. Any troubled kid was either raised by the hands of miscreants or it still had a chance to grow better. No amount of money could change her mind, which is why she was mad when her new client handed her the picture.
"Didn't I make myself clear? I said no children. Is that so hard?" She thrust the photo back.
"They're not a child," her client gruffed back from under the hood. "I know the rules."
It took them a solid ten minutes to convince Willow to take on the job, but eventually, they managed to convince her they were telling the truth and the target was worth the trouble. The pay was much bigger than Willow had seen for other nobles and when she took a closer look, she realized why.
They were royal. Not duke royal, not 'my grandfather used to be an earl' royal, but as in, Elf King royal.
So Willow took the offer. She packed her bags, grabbed the papers and hitched a ride to this royal's kingdom.
For the next few days, she lived on the streets and watched how the people acted, how the guards carried on their jobs and more importantly, she kept her eyes out for any sign of her target. They didn’t seem to be one to throw themselves parties on the streets every third day, so it made them harder to find, and in extent, harder to kill.
