Among the space-faring humans, some unfortunate star sailors are taken as prisoners by an unknown alien force known colloquially as “the surgeons”. The surgeons are capable of drastically changing a human’s body and genome. Usually the people who are rescued can be successfully integrated back into society when adequate accommodations are provided. Typically, their biggest challenges are societal prejudice and mental health issues from trauma and isolation.

No-one’s been able to capture a surgeon and hold them accountable. Their distinctive organic ships appear abandoned. Some people wonder if they are so alien in neuropsychology that peace cannot be achieved. The best we can do is be kind to the people we bring back.
