Peggy loved when her husband brought her to these parties. Since they had wed the year before, Benedict had shown her off to everyone he knew whenever he got a chance, and she thrived on the attention. Even now, six months into her first pregnancy, she was the center of attention, working the room while on her husband’s arm and happily chatting with everyone she met until Benedict split off from her to speak with some of his fellow soldiers.
After a few minutes of sitting alone, Peggy decided she needed to stretch her legs, and got up with only slight difficulty, and crossed the room to speak with another young woman in attendance. “Miss Schuyler,” she said, giving the slightly older woman a charming smile, “I’m Peggy Shippen Arnold, I don’t believe we’ve met officially, but I wanted to congratulate you on your engagement to Colonel Hamilton. My husband speaks very highly of him and I’m sure you’ll be very happy together.”
