All the antagonists/characters opposing the protagonist have come back from what seemed to be death or “the end” in V. E. Schwab’s books (that I’ve read so far)—Sloan from Monsters of Verity, Holland Vosijk from Shades of Magic, Eli Ever from Villains, Owen Chris Clarke from The Archived,,, even Sabine from Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil can kind of be counted because even after Charlotte thinks she escaped she’s still there, and then even more after, when she killed Alice.

I also noticed that sacrifice plays a really big role in her books as well—just well enough to leave the audience hanging but that wraps the story up in a non-standard “happy ending” way. For example Kate Harker and Ilsa Flynn dying in Monsters of Verity; Holland dying in Shades of Magic and the defeat of Osaron leaving Kell’s magic “shattered”; Addie giving up a life with Henry in exchange for Luc leaving him and his memories intact; both Sabine and Lottie dying at Alice’s hands in Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil; even Victor Vale briefly dying and then coming back but also with his powers “broken” in the Villains series. This isn’t as noticeable in The Archived (I was actually fully expecting either Wesley or Mackenzie not to make it to the end of the book) unless you count Eric.

Okay so it may have been ten million years since I posted that poll about OG stuff but in my defense: listen I suck at remembering to post at all don’t look at me-

So anyway. Meet the Unbound. They are still a bit of a work in progress - they started out as a doodle and then took a mind of its own lmao. They are something of a roaming diety - they came into being between worlds/dimensions and never had one to call its home.

So it tries to take one.

Either by taking the place of a person who Initially lived there (memories taste delicious and mimicry is fun!) or by force.

I finished rereading (well re-listening to) The Archived duology by VE Schwab and I feel like something deep within me has healed.

Not because the story is sunshine and rainbows -- quite the opposite actually-- but because even when the characters are at their most broken, their most psychologically damaged, they find ways to build full lives and connections with each other. There is death and fear and grief and trauma and lies but there is also banter and inside jokes and secret promises and companionship. There's just something so hopeful about that message. Like, even if everything sucks, we can still be okay.
