First congratulations on the name change! Very accurate if I say so myself.
Secondly, I've been recently thinking about Marius, after finishing B&G for the eight time, and I've been wondering on the fact that he's never truly fitted in, as a Roman man or as a vampire.
The way this man constructed every little detail of his existence to be as Roman as possible but he never truly looked Roman enough for his peers nor was his personality one of a Patrician, hot take I know, this man feels too much, loves too much and is probably at his happiest in a houseful of children to raise, painting flowers in his walls and having windows looking out to the sea.
(Unbothered, Moisturized and Thriving)
But he's never truly fit in as a vampire either! He hates being one and in Pandora he literally advocated for the decline of the species, after his turning I would too hate being a vampire.
That is why I mostly disagree with the PL trilogy, let him be a lone weirdo, he doesn't need to be PM of the vampires.
What is your opinion in this? Is he just a weirdo who never truly fitted in? Even at being Roman?
Absolutely, I do think Marius is, fundamentally, a weird little guy. A deeply educated, emotionally repressed, Roman-coded weird little guy, but a weird little guy nonetheless.
And I think that is actually one of the most interesting things about him. He never really belongs anywhere. He does not fit neatly into his mortal family, he does not fit comfortably among other vampires, and then, after he takes on Those Who Must Be Kept, he isolates himself even further. That role gives him purpose, yes, but it also becomes the perfect excuse to deny himself intimacy. Mael and Avicus are probably two of the clearest examples of people who saw him, loved him, and understood him in ways he was not willing to accept. And what does he do? Sends them away.
Funnily, I've never seen him as fatherly. Patriarchal yes, but not fatherly. Historically speaking, Rome was an intensely patriarchal society, especially for a man of Marius’ social standing. Marriage, children, legacy, household authority, family name, all of that would have been beaten into him. A Roman man in his forties without a wife or children would have been unusual, particularly if he came from a respectable class background.
There is a difference between being patriarchal and being nurturing. Marius likes structure, obedience, legacy, and control. That does not automatically mean he is good at softness, emotional availability, or raising anyone without turning it into a philosophical project. He may take responsibility for people, but he often does it through authority. That's not to say he doesn't have tenderness, he very clearly does. I personally think he feels far deeper than anyone realises so he surpasses a lot of that.
And that is where I think his tragedy sits. He wants connection, but he does not know how to receive it without trying to manage it.
As for vampirism, I agree that he argues against making more vampires, but I do not think that means he simply hates being one. Marius is full of contradictions. He can recognise the horror of vampirism and still love the power, beauty, endurance, and intellectual freedom it gives him. He can think the species should decline while also enjoying his own immortality. That is very Marius, honestly. Deeply principled until his own desires complicate the principle.
So yes, I think he has always been an outsider He is not built to fit anywhere neatly, which is exactly why I find him so compelling.
Welcome to the Gove, I am an independent roleplay blog for the vampire Mael from the Vampire Chronicles. The Mun to this blog is well over the age of 21, and I will only roleplay with those who are the same. You are welcome to follow and interact if you are over 18, however, I will not be Rping with you. I have very few rules here, and as I progress this blog there will be things added and taken away. Here is what you need to know: 1. I am from the United States, I do not disclose anything further about where I am from. There will be very few OOC posts, all will have the correct banner attached, and I don't get personal with people unless we talk regularly. All asks will be answered by my muse unless otherwise stated. 2. I write with everyone, OCS, Canon characters, etc. For shipping purposes do note that I roleplay him as bisexual with a preference for men. While I will write smut with all genders, romantic relationships will most likely be kept to just men. My Highest ships for him are with Avicus, Marius, Thorne and Santino. I am not exclusive and will be openly engaging with multiple blogs of the same character should they come my way. 3. DMs are open once we engage with each other publicly, you will not have access to my social media unless we are close, nor do I have much of it. 4. My blog is dead dove friendly, book based, and not spoiler free. I forget to tag things, I like my writing dark , demented at times, and sexual. I like story/world building and feeling like our characters create a universe all their own. I prefer larger roleplay replies but can handle some small back and forth. 5. I have been roleplaying for several years, and on tumblr for most of them. While this blog is new, I have been RPing as Mael for a long time, tumblr has changed since I have last been here. So please, be patient with me as I grow.
My tags will be as followed and will be updated as I get around to it. The Grove Whispers - All OOC/Mun Posts Under the old Gods - Headcanons about Mael Moss and Cobblestone - Starters written by me, Ideas I would like to try, etc. Additionally with the Starters/Prompts tag For I am Yours and you are Mine - An Aesthetics tag for lovers. This may one day branch into separate names, but for now it rests. Starters - Starters / Prompts, self explanatory. This is will have a mix of premade options, along with original writing that will also be tagged as 'Moss and Cobblestone' The Muse - Things that others post that remind me of my muse
