The Vanities
The Vanities are a synthpop duo from Cardiff, Wales... The band was formed in the summer of 2001 by founder members Rhys Bradley and Adam Hill who were united by a strong desire to combine epic three minute pop songs with fantastic riffs, beautiful melodies, soaring choruses and memorable lyrics, with a touch of glamour, drama, decadence and spectacle which they felt was much lacking on the local scene. The band made an immediate impression on the Cardiff circuit and it wasn't long until ultra cool indie label Boobytrap Records picked up on them and released their debut single Space Tourist. The exposure this gained paved the way for a very successful period, highlights of which included multiple spins from the late and great John Peel, an appearence at the official In The City A&R conference in Manchester, and a rather bizarre collaboration with Tony Hadley of Spandau Ballet fame. Since the band's genesis The Vanities have existed in many different incarnations and guises that have included numerous line-ups - one could say that they've been through a lot of ch-ch-ch-ch-changes. As result of this lack of stability and continuity, Rhys and Adam took the decision to ditch the guitars, basses, and drums and at the beginning of 2006 the band marked their re-birth as a synth-pop duo with a hugely successful sell-out show at the Barfly in Cardiff. Drawing inspiration from key influences such as Bowie, Depeche Mode and Duran Duran etc the band write songs about love and hate; life and death; hope and despair; light and dark, and everything in-between. Their live shows have an almost religious quality and are an explosion of emotion, passion and drama.
