The Venerer was spat, not born. It did not breathe at Lucio's first kill, was not twin to the plague that followed him. Rather, it was a curse. When Montag Morgasson conquers a land, the ground runs red with beetles and blood, the dirt rejects him, and the Venerer is born. They are meant to contain his sickness in the pit of their belly, to consume it all, pests and person, and die with a full stomach, warmed by war. Of course, we know Lucio doesn't die by digestion. Always nipping at his ankles, someone else already burned his body before the Venerer could have its last meal.
Denied death, the Venerer started to shrivel and sniffed out the closest thing to the Red Plague's nesting place, its victims. Venerer wandered the streets of Vesuvia, bulbous, full of blood, eating the dead before the dying, but never satisfied. For anyone who loves others or loves life, this is a disturbing sight, an extension of the sickness and not the solution. It was hunted to the edges of Vesuvia, a decomposer, not a predator, now prey to frightened people. It took flight to the Lazaret, stealing away what it could, and the more it ate, the more it resembled its food, slowly forming a face, fingers, limbs, but retaining a beastly stomach. Surrounded by bones, it fell asleep…
…Until the beetles came back. It woke up to Valdemar's wonder, vivisected and strewn about a table. For three years, it had been the Quaestor's prized patient. Its stagnant nature, unable to live and unable to die, fascinated them, and let Valdemar burn, break, and embalm the Venerer however they liked with no consequence. It considered for a time if this was death, that its hunger would leave out of its abdomen, that Valdemar would deliver it back to the dirt it came from, but even if they wanted to, none of their tortures had worked before. If it could, it would have died ages ago.
Valdemar explained its state, mused over its organs with gentle articulation and meticulous hands while the Venerer looked down. Was this the body it was at odds with? Were these sacks and muscles and sinew responsible for its incompletion? They watched its first words rise in exposed lungs, "I am hungry." Valdemar seemed alight at this declaration. "Of course you are," they said behind a medical mask, skin stretching to what must have been a smile, "Your stomach is smaller than my fist."
The two were curious of each other, Venerer of what the doctor could do for it, Valdemar of what it would let them do now that it was awake, but they seemed to have a similar understanding, that this stomach had something wrong with it and should be removed. When this did not stop the hunger, and the Venerer ached outside of its body, the Quaestor was even more pleased, curious for this damnedable creature. There may be another solution, and it would be sought in Valdemar's fellow Courtiers. It takes a ravenous monster to know a ravenous monster, but they don't tend to be generous. Luckily, the Procurator was at least suggestible.
The Venerer would be kept in the Lazaret for a while, as Valdemar's pet project, but when Valdemar was called to duty, they would soon have it follow. Perhaps they could keep their close, disguise it, convince the Countess to give it a room and them the key.
Just in time, the plague, the Count, and the Venerer return to Vesuvia…
